and ephemeral signs of its existence are almost palpable.

“There is an indefinable, mysterious power that pervades everything. I feel it, though I do not see it. It is this unseen power that makes itself felt and yet defies all proof, because it is so unlike all that I perceive through my senses. It transcends the senses” - Mahatma Gandhi

It is the tenuousness of connection to the material, physical world that we currently inhabit that opens the doorway to just such places. As an ascetic, Gandhi was well placed to tap into this resource.

I am an Atheist, but I believe in connectedness; that is, we are part of a greater whole to which we will someday return. Sensing this greater whole is the sensation of which Gandhi speaks. It tends to reason that the closer we get to return(death) to the whole, the greater our sense of it will be.

These sensations can, of course, be produced by distancing oneself from the material world. This is the basis of many eastern practices, that work to encourage one to let go of physical sensations, or rather the dependence on them, and open up one's mind to sensations of a different realm.

This is the "thinness". The weight and mass of the material world is rather evident, but losing one's connection to it allows the tenuous quality that enables one to tap into the greater and unseen whole.

The "thin place" concept is of a Celtic origin, and it is believed to be a place where this earth and the spirit realm are closer together.

These thin places remained even after the conversion of Celtic areas to Christianity, and then many were renamed for Celtic saints (ex.: Brigid's Well)
