James gave in-site about faith and works, he was alluding to the fact that faith and works co-exist. For example James 2:19- 20 says,EVEN THE DEMONS BELIEVE AND TREMBLE "O FOOLISH MAN, faith without works is dead?
James 2:18 says, "SHOW ME YOUR FAITH WITHOUT YOUR WORKS, AND I WILL SHOW YOU MY FAITH BY MY WORKS."
James understood that faith was action, this is the reason many people who think they are saved will be surprisingly lost, unfortunately. Obey Acts 2:38!!

James was not an Apostle. he was supposed to be the half brother of Jesus, through his mothers side.
During the ministry of Jesus before the resurrection, he thought Jesus was crazy, and came to take him from what he was doing.
20 Then Jesus entered a house, and again a crowd gathered, so that he and his disciples were not even able to eat. 21 When his family heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, "He is out of his mind." (Mark 3)
He was a practicing Jew, attempting to do what his half brother did perfectly. So much so, that after he became a Christian there was no problem with him worshiping in the temple along side other Jews. When Paul would come to Jerusalem, James would talk to Paul in order for him to practice Judaism with him, as if that would make things calm with the other legalists who were there. (Acts 21)
He talked Paul into practicing a ritual that would make Paul clean, as if he could be any cleaner than what faith in Christ does to sinners. Paul folded and went along with it.
So James was a leader in Jerusalem. Thought to be spiritual, those who respected family relatives rather than the Gospel made the mistake of listening to James.
Neither what Paul taught nor what Peter taught could dissuade James. (Acts 15: 6 - 11; Galatians 3: 2 - 5)
So James was different because he didn't understand what Jesus taught. The others had better things to say, and didn't need to be reconciled to Paul or Jesus.

James is the name of three persons in the New Testament. (1)James the elder was a son of Zebedee and Salome,a brother of John the Evangelist, probably a cousin of Jesus and one of the three favorite Apostles. He was be headed by order of King Herod Agrippa, thus becoming the first martyr among the Apostles.--(2)James the less was the son of Alphaeus. One of the twelve Apostles.(3) Then third James the brother of Jesus. He became a believer after Christ Resurrection. and became the pastor of the church at Jerusalem.

Which James?
... I see a few answers that seem to be talking about Jesus' half-brother, who penned the letter which bears his name, he was NOT AN APOSTLE.
You added info identifying James as that author. Here is a quote from NIV Study Bible Notes on the authorship of that book:
The author identifies himself as James (1:1); he was probably the brother of Jesus and leader of the Jerusalem council (Ac 15). Four men in the NT have this name. The author of this letter could not have been the apostle James, who died too early (A.D. 44) to have written it. The other two men named James had neither the stature nor the influence that the writer of this letter had.
.........
Though they do define a couple words in different ways, James and the apostles/other New Testament writers had the same message. James speaks of "faith" as merely mental ascent. Paul and generally the rest of the New Testament writers follow a "deeper" definition of the word, more in line with the way the Hebrew writer defined it:
Heb 11:1 Faith is being sure of what we hope for. It is being certain of what we do not see. 2 That is what the people of long ago were praised for.
Faith is a difficult word to define well.
... When I was in school, a recruiter came and spoke to a couple of my classes about working with Wycliffe Bible Translators. http://www.wycliffe.org/ One of his stories involved a tribal group in Guatemala who had no word for "faith" or "belief." The team had discussed and tried several things and not been able to get these Guatemalan Indians to understand the concept of "faith."
One day the group of Wycliffe linguists were being led through the jungle to a nearby village. There was a rope bridge across a deep gorge with no way to get across except this weak looking bridge. The guide speaks to the group as they reach the bridge. In his language he tells them, "You can LEAN YOUR WHOLE WEIGHT on this bridge." Needless to say, they had the way to explain the meaning of "faith."
Sometimes people let minor difficulties or differences in the way words are used "get to them." No, James, Peter, and Paul all had the same ideas, they just put them into words differently. The Christian is not "saved" by "meritorious works," but "works" are the natural outcome of faith and coming into a relationship with Jesus.
Ephesians 2:8 God’s grace has saved you because of your faith in Christ. Your salvation doesn’t come from anything you do. It is God’s gift. 9 It is not based on anything you have done. No one can brag about earning it.
10 God made us. He created us to belong to Christ Jesus.-->Now we can do good things. Long ago God prepared them for us to do.

The problem is that today most people do not understand that man is triune: spirit, soul, and body.
Therefore each part must be saved. The spirit is saved by grace instantaneously:

The soul is saved by works progressively:
http://www.kingdom-gospel.com/soul.html
The apostles agreed on these matters, but James concentrated more on the soul. He said this:
James 1:21 MKJV
Therefore putting aside all filthiness and overflowing of evil, receive in meekness the implanted Word, which is able to save your souls.
By the way, the body is saved in the future at the rapture or reserection.

It depends on which James you are referring to.
There are 3
James the Younger... Mark 15:40 son of Mary
James the brother of John the Son of Zebedee
who died in Acts 12 Or
James the Lords brother...
There are different views on which one wrote the book of James..... perhaps you are thinking the book of James has a different flavor to it, esp being one of the first general epistles written; please let me know what you are thinking with a little more detail... Thanks , blessings.

The Apostles had a personal relationship with Christ. So does every other follower of Jesus. It's not about religion. So, your question is convoluted.

How might that be? James was a christian too and his spiritual relationship with God, via grace, was no different than the rest. Remember; God is not a respecter of persons.

Of all of them he was the most reluctant to allow non-Jews into Christianity. The most active in welcoming non-Jews into Christianity was of course Paul, but Peter also worked earnestly for ministry to non-Jews.
