My dog came in with his left hind pinky claw gone! There is evidence it was bleeding but now it's just kind of pussey. It's kind of late so i was advised to put it in water to clean it to see it better, he wouldn't let me do that i think it stung. And then to put gauze and wrap it in a bandage. He let me do that and seems to be fine. Is this okay?? What can I do?? Help!! I am a first time dog owner....

whether he likes it or not you have to clean it, then you can use antibiotic ointment on it and a clean bandage. is he in pain?? might want to make an appointment with a vet or at least call them to see what they recommend your next course of action should be. he should be ok with just the wound cleaning and dressing but if he were to act like he was in pain or if anything else might be broken then I think I would have him checked out.

As long as the toe is not bleeding. You can get some hibitane cleanser to clean the toe. Is the kwik exposed? This can be painful if touched. I would try to clean the toe 2-3 times a day and keep it wrapped with some gauze. You can put some polysporin antibiotic ointment on it. It should be fine . IF it doesn't look any better in a day or so,... then have a vet check it. Those dew claws can be a hassle. Most dogs have them removed when fixed. Don't panic this is minor. Good luck

Firmly, but kindly make him let you at it, clean the pus out of the wound area, and hit it with triple antibiotic cream, then wrap it to keep him from licking it off. He runs through his poop, and other animal's as well when outside, and pus is not a good thing on a dog. Easily remedied early, the nail ought to grow back, but if he somehow tore root and all, it'll close up if it isn't too infected to heal correctly. Keep a nose check on his paw for a few days, any odor of increasing infection, get him some doggy penicillin, and he'll do great. Cleaned and treated with the neosporin or it's generic equivalent, he ought to do great without further intervention, save to keep him from chewing it if he tries.

Are you talking about the dewclaw? At this point, call the vet first thing in the morning. Unless your vet has an oncall number tonight. But I think it will be ok till morning. Yes, neosporin and A+D ointment onit will be ok too.

I agree that he should be fine for the night. If its pusing, I would call the vet in the morning. They should look at it, just to make sure there is no infection, which will lead to further problems. But I would definitely call the vet in the morning just to be safe.

You can put triple antibiotic ointment on the injury as well. If he will let the bandage alone, it should heal fairly well.
