Catholics share the belief in the Communion of Saints with many other Christians, including the Eastern Orthodox, Anglican, Episcopal, and Methodist Churches.
The Communion of Saints is the belief where all saints are intimately related in the Body of Christ, a family. When you die and go to heaven, you do not leave this family.
Everyone in heaven or on their way to heaven are saints, you, me, my deceased grandmother, Mary the mother of Jesus, Mother Teresa and Pope John Paul II.
As part of this family, you may ask your family and friends living here on earth to pray for you. Or, you may also ask the Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint Andrew, or your deceased grandmother living in heaven to pray for you.
Prayer to saints in heaven is simple communication, not worship.
Asking others to pray for you whether your loved ones on Earth or your loved ones in heaven is always optional.
Benedict is asking John Paul to pray for him that he may have guidence.

1 John 2:18,22 KJV - "Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time. Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son."
In its modern sense, antichrist is a Dominion Theologian. The sincere "ministers" sees themselves as teachers and servants of the local body and as its evangelists out preaching to the lost. However, new men are being taught that they are the "pastors" and therefore in charge of the local flock -- spitting in the face of those who feed, cloth and house their family. He, in fact, sits (rather than going into all the world) in the "temple" and all external signs are that he believes that he is the local Christ.
The "burden loader" was not doing these things for the sheep of the flock. Rather, he saw the flock as serving him and the only way he could ever make this happen would be to draw them away from Christ to follow him. This, of course, would make him an antichrist and a sheep eater.
These men have adopted the methods of Change Agentry which demands that they must move you out of your comfort zone to plan your life and worship for you. They are anti whatever you want to do. They are the because enemies of the quiet, body of Christ.
They always fail and fall but never without eating a lot of good lambs and being consumed by their own "heart" worms.

Jews, Christians, and Muslims all worship the God of Abraham. Christians, in accepting the recent testomony and Apostolic coaching, have come to have confidence that the God of Abraham is the Holy Trinity, one God in 3 persons, the father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Jews and Muslims inspite of the reality that believing in the only authentic God do no longer settle for the doctrine of the Trinity. God is everywhere (different than per hazard in Hell) and Christians are call to desire in any respect situations. for this reason I see no project with the Pope or the different Christian praying in a mosque, temple, or the different place in the familiar universe. With love in Christ.

Catholics understand that there are saints in heaven with Christ. in reading revelations it talks about those just saints. many people, including the pope believe that John Paul II was a man very filled by the Spirit. i believe when he says he is praying he's trying to meditate on the things that JP2 did that were Christ like during THIS time. prayer is meditation, talking to Christ. i have often thought deeply about past friends and family who have died - those who i loved and respected - and think - what would they tell me - what would be in theri head and then ask God for the wisdom to do the right thing.

I'm just speculating, knowing what I know about Catholicism...
because the present Pope believes that the previous Pope is alive, and now with Christ and all the saints who have gone before.
And because the old pope is already there in a blessed state and with Christ for eternity, the new pope asks the old pope to talk to Jesus for him.
But Catholic apologetists, can you field this more accurately, because I'm not Catholic?

Because he is above the Scripture...he is the Vicar of Christ.
You are to accept his interpretation as infallable or perish with the heathen. if he prays to the deceased, this action supercedes or perhaps clarifies Scripture.
Don't you see how this makes it easy on the rest of us...we don;t have to sort anything out on our own. Go through the motions as defined by the church and you will go home.
The FORCC reigns supreme according to the testimony of every pope in history. For the unenlightened, FORCC is the acronym for the Fraternal Order of the Roman Catholic Church...kinda like the Masons or the Elks lodge....real feel good spitiual stuff devoid of reality.
OK, I have gone too far...thanks for listening. I will now return to my cave and sleep it off.
And no, I am not afraid of hell fire for speaking the Truth...I will sleep like a baby...[:>)}

Might you offer a link to the statement so that we can understand it's validity and its context? Hearsay is really tough to work with.
Do you think the Pope does not pray to Jesus? I would presume that he does. With your obviously incomplete understanding of Catholicism, a singular statement from the Pope should be quite easy to misinterpret.

They believe in that praying for the saints thing. Crazy.
Yes indeed, He should be praying for Jesus' guidance in his life.

Because Pope John Paul was one of those kind souls who didn't piss people off. Also it is easier to pray to some one you talked to before in the physical plane. Who is it easier to turn to a non-judgemental friend or a therapist who you don't know if they are judging you?
