Garbage is "ordures"
If you "take out the trash" though, you'd use the word poubelles (literally meaning garbage cans). "Sortez des poubelles"
Good day

It depends in the context in which you need to use the word. It you are talking about the stuff which is discarded in dustbins both "les ordures" or "les détritus"are correct;
"J'ai mis les ordures dans la poubelle"
I have put the garbage in the garbage can/dustbin.
However if you are talking about "garbage" in the sense of valueless witing or speech as in "This text is garbage" or "He is talking garbage" you cannot use those words.
The correct expressions would be:
"Ce texte ne vaut rien" (this text is worthless)
"Il dit des sottises" (What he says is rubbish)
