It doesn't unless you let it. It's a job, like any other. Do it well and be grateful for having had the opportunity. Status is not stagnant...it is like the wind, forever changing with the needs and climate of the world around us.

Depends on the person. If the status is something they cannot handle, the stress alone can cause problems with not only their mental health but all around health. Everyone has their limit of what their body can handle before the mind. One may think they can handle the job, but their body is showing signs they cannot. My opinion, its how a persons body handles the status and the responsibility before they are able to handle in mentally. Most the time, a promotion seems like a good thing, for example, the stress of the new position will affect the body way before it does mentally.

It can give you a sense of pride, teach a sense of responsibility and leadership, and help with self-esteem. Of course all these things can go so far as to be overboard: You can get full of yourself, put a lot of pressure on yourself and turn into quite the power monster, and invest your self-esteem in the wrong things...personally a job is a wonderful fulfilling way to spend your time but shouldn't define you or how you feel about yourself.

I think one of the big things that happens to mental health in this situation is an overwhelming sense of insecurity. You don't know if people are fond of you for the person you are, or for your money, prestige, using you as a connection to bigger and better things. Pretty soon everyone looks like an asskisser and you start to wonder what people "really" want from you, and sometimes you convince yourself that you are pretty powerful. And lots of times, you also set about creating an image for yourself, and masks to protect it, because you aren't sure if anyone will accept you with faults and problems and your real self starts to look very hideous because you are trying so hard not to show people who you really are.

Another thing that often accompanies status and power...is having a lot of privileges that you cannot handle. If you aren't disciplined about having a lot of resources at your fingertips, then you can easily fall into the trappings of success. This ironically leads to someone who has a lot of power...feeling incredibly weak. What good is a fantastic job if all you do with your fantastic salary is buy coke with it?

If one believes an important job equals gained status than ones self-esteem may get a boost from obtaining such a job. However, that good feeling or raised self-esteem can be very short lived if the competancy needed in said job is not exhibited, constantly!

One hopes that anyone who moves up the ladder and gets important jobs already posesses or builds a pretty solid self-esteem and thus remains level headed.

Ah, right off the bat...

"status gained" might really be "status conceived"

How does one measure "status" anyway?

Isn't it in the mind of the beholder?

Maybe "status" is really an indicator of one's mental tendencies.
