Nope you can not keep a "whole" fish on ice. You can on the other hand keep fillets or headed and gutted fishing on ice. I worked in a remote part of Alaska as a fishing guide for 2 years. You can keep fish on ice for about 5 days. There are a couple of factors that will help you keep fish longer. First fillet the fish ASAP. The second is cooling it down ASAP. What causes the fish to go bad is the breaking down of the flesh. By getting the blood out and cooling the meat, it will slow the process down. One trick I like is taking knife and putting it in right behind the head and into the throat. It gets out a ton of blood from the core of the fish (much more then just cutting the throat). If you have shaved or dry ice I would use that. Remember to try and keep some thing between the fish and the ice to prevent freezer burn. Dry ice can ruin a fish if you let it touch the bare flesh. I can say we did a 7 day float trip and had two coolers full of fish and not one piece of it went bad.

It will keep just as well as it would in a refrigerator. Just gut it and get it into the cooler asap after catching it.
1) Gut the fish and remove the gills
2) Place the fish in a plastic bag.
3) Whether you use ice cubes or large blocks keep them in their bag - the ice will last much longer. The fish doesn't HAVE to contact the ice as long as the air in the cooler is cold - just like in an electric fridge or freezer - but the fish will stay colder if it's under the ice.
4) Empty any water out regularly (via the cooler's drain) so you don't have to open the lid.
5) Keep the lid closed as much as possible.
6) Keep the cooler in the shade.
7) Check the bag that the fish is in once or twice per day and dump out any water.
8) As the ice melts and the bag fills with water, poke a small hole in the bag and drain the water out a couple of times per day, but not into the cooler. No use cooling the water.
I've kept all sorts of game fish for days in a cooler on ice.

A whole fish would maybe keep, but the possibility of it going bad are high. It would be better to cook it over an open fire or stove in water for the filleted meat. Portioning it out in even sections and then icing it down in the chest after it cools a bit in the river, perhaps, in sealed plastic bags? would increase the chances you DON'T get any water-borne or other diseases. The fish itself could contaminate all the stuff in your ice chest if not sealed from it, anyway.

Camping well no it will turn mushy if your out in the boondocks fillet . Salmon are best caught in June, July, Aug, some in Sept most out of Lake's you can't be to far from a Store go to store 1st. ask if you can keep fish in ther coller / freezer tell them your predtument , cost me $2.00 a day fish on.

That is pushing it...can you get some dry ice...that way you can be sure the fish will stay very cold and fresh.

pack it in dry ice, make sure that the cooler is well insulated and sealed tight and it should be okay for 3 days.
