I do constantly and they all give me a dirty look. Why?

I don't know. I smile if the impulse grabs me but I don't do it every time. It's better to keep it genuine. You might just try a friendly nod without the smile.
Big cities are different than small towns in this respect, Ive discovered.

I think you are going a bit overboard. I small often and I don't get dirty looks from other people. Generally the smile back. Maybe you should wait until the other person smiles at you. Then you won't get dirty looks.

Yes, I smile at people all the time and most smile back. The ones that don't I think that either they are just mean or they are tired of smiling at people who do not smile back, so they have given up

Yes, I do. I remember when I was a (small town) kid and my (city) cousin visited. We were walking down the road and I smiled and spoke to someone we passed and she asked me who it was. I said I didn't know, we always speak to folks we meet. She just couldn't believe I'd speak to a stranger. So maybe some of the folks you meet think the same way. Keep smiling, when it's returned you'll know it's worth the effort.

I do it all the time, too. Those who give you a dirty look just don't see why someone else should be pleasant when they themselves aren't.
