Not sure what your speciafically asking. I'm in the army so I'll break it down.
There's enlisted, warrant officer, and officer.

In enlisted it goes (from lowest to highest)
PVT (Private) E-1
PV2 (Private 2) E-2
PFC (Private First Class) E-3
SPC (Specialist) E-4
CPL (Corporal) E-4
SGT (Sergeant) E-5
SSG (Staff Sergeant) E-6
SFC (Sergeant First Class) E-7
MSG (Master Sergeant) E-8
1SG (1st Sergeant) E-8
SGM (Sergeant Major) E-9
CSM (Command Sergeant Major) E-9

Then warrant officer:
CW1 (WO-1)
CW2 (WO-2)
CW3 (WO-3)
CW4 (WO-4)
CW5 (WO-5)

And officer:
2LT (2nd Lieutenant) O-1
1LT (1st Lieutenant) O-2
CPT (Captain) O-3
MAJ (Major) O-4
LTC (Lieutenant Colonel) O-5
COL (Colonel) O-6
BG (Brigadier General) O-7
MG (Major General) O-8
LTG (Lieutenant General) O-9
GEN (General, 4 Star) O-10

Now...the E-, CW-, and O-, is the pay grade not the rank. Which is why, for example SPC and Corporal are both E-4, because they have the same pay grade but a CPL does outrank a SPC. Commisioned officers (2LT-GEN) outrank everybody....technically....Warrant officers outrank all enlisted. But for instance, while a 2LT techinically outranks let's say, a Sergeant Major, he would never pull rank just b/c of the fact a SGM has been in the army 20+ years and a 2LT just got in. I've seen an LT try and pull that and it didn't pan out well. Oh and Warrant Officers, while technically not outranking commisioned officers, they pretty much do whatever they want and people don't **** with them. Ecspecially if their a CW3 and up. As far as other branches, I know Marines are similar except their SFC/E-7 is a Gunny Sergeant and there's some other small differences. Air force is also somewhat the same. Don't ask me about navy though.
