I'm going salmon fishing/camping for 3 days and will only have a cooler full of ice (that I can refill with fresh ice). Will it be ok to keep the whole salmons I catch in the cooler? Or should I gut them and de-head them?

make sure you gut it (be sure to remove the kidney which is the "blood" that runs along the spine) and don't worry about the head unless you are worried about space in your cooler. it will be fine for a few days but don't open the cooler unless you have to. the flesh will get really cold but will not freeze in ice. when you do freeze it you may want to fillet it or cut it into steaks. the best way to keep fish in a freezer is to vacuum seal it in portions and only take out what you are going to eat.

better to keep them on ice for as long as you can... they'll taste better freshly cut and cooked straight away
