A hero, eh? Thats a tough one.
For almost 27 years I worked with men (and a couple of women) who fit the definition of "hero" to a T and yet they never thought of themselves that way. The definition of a hero can mean a lot of things.
When I think of a hero I think of my Dad....who died 30 years ago. I remember him working like a dog every day trying to put food on the table and pay the bills and make a home for us.
Did I think he was a hero then? Nahhh....but I do now.
I remember when I was a kid.... him pushing me out of the way of a car....only to be hit by the car himself. And he never hesitated. Was he a hero? Yep.
I remember when I was 10 and home from the hospital at Christmas....and we're walking down an alley to the house and a huge piece of ice slid off the roof and he sheltered me with his own body as the ice crashed down on him....Was her a hero then? Yep he was to me...but he never got a medal or his name in the papers.
My point is that ya don't have to rush into burning buildings...or shoot it out with robbers... or get a medal to be a hero. We see hero's almost every day....it's just that some of them never get the acclaim that they deserve.....and thats just fine with most of them.
Yeah it may sound corny but my Dad will always be my hero.

Yes, I know a lot of people that I would consider heros. A lot of firemen, police, and military are heros. To me if you are willing to put yourself between the bad guys and the innocent people in order to protect them you are a hero.
So are the dads who are doing the neighborhood watch program.
So are the boys who stand up to the school yard bully when they see he is going to beat on a smaller kid or a girl or the kid who is different.
So is the little boy who pulled my son out of the pool when he drowned and needed cpr to bring him back.
So are some of the people I work with who work with juvenile delinquents trying to make a change.
So are the doctors without borders who work on poor kids in third world countries on their summer "vacations".

A Hero can to refer to characters that, in the face of danger and adversity or from a position of weakness, display courage and the will for self-sacrifice, that is, heroism, for some greater good, originally of martial courage or excellence but extended to more general moral excellence.

Sounds like a hero. Does he protect the poor, the helpless, and uphold the American Way?

He sounds like a Super-Hero not a Actuall real life hero. Hiro Nakamura from Heroes is the real hero.
