I am doing an investigative report for Tourism, and i decided to do it on global warming, but I need to relate it to the tourism industry. The only thing I can think of is obvious planes and cars emitting fossil fuels. Links to sites on these issues would be greatly appreciated. Also, if you have answered this question on another section of yahoo, please do not answer again. Thanks

Well , if you believe the latest reports, cows ( cow farts to be exact) create the most methane which supposedly is causing global warming. So if tourists eat more beef and cows are the greatest contributor then there is your connection. Don't worry it is all hype!! There was a global cooling crisis in the '70's that was going to cause a terrible ice age.

Whatever we do, it would have consequences .... Be it eat meat like another have answered, or using modern transportation.

Tourism, also another activity by humans, that can destroy the environment, but at the same time, with proper education, it can SAVE it. Greens are vital to recycle all the carbon dioxide and gasses that human activity create, chopping trees may not help.

So if tourists see the importance, they'll consider conservation of resources, maybe through recycling or using less petrol carbon or other natural resources through change of lifestyle. Eg, cycling to cut petrol fumes, wear sweater to cut heating fuel, use less paper to save more trees..... We have more than 6 billion people, if we can convince 1/2 to change, 90% of the battle is won.

Of course, if no changes, mother nature will have its ways to change.... global warming is only the beginning......

As you already said, planes and cars (and trains, busses, ships, and any fuel burning form of transportation) will have an impact on global warming. So will the use of electricity in resorts, amusement parks, and any place where people congregate on vacation. I also think that the loss of forest land, which is a result of clearing to build resort properties can increase global warming because fewer trees in the world will mean more CO2 that fails to get absorbed and turned into clean O2. More CO2 is a major contributor to global warming.

I think Global warning has a great impact to tourism idustry. Hong Kong is currently ranked as the number three most polluted city in this world. On top of many critics in Hong Kong's foul air from tourists all over this world. A few American tourists said in the internet that they don't want to visit Hong Kong again! Many companies are relocated out of Hong Kong. For instance, the majority head offices of many hedge fund companies have relocated to Singapore because of operational cost is too high in Hong Kong and, particulary the air pollution. Many top mangement personnel are relocated out of Hong Kong for the reason of don't want their family members and particularly their children get their lungs conteminated. John Size, the twice winners of head trainer of Hong Kong Jockey Club is in a delinma situation. His wife, Carmel made comments in this Sunday's South China Morning Post criticized that Hong Kong foul air is unacceptable. She decided to move back to Australia. Hong Kong has only tourists from China at present. China is also a polluted country.

you can look at the factors involved in the global warming phenomenon and see how they relate to tourism:

1- increase of air-polluting greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide and nitrous oxides, in the atmosphere

2- changes in climate and weather patterns, such as increased precipitation and severe weather in some areas, and decreased precipitation and droughts in others

3- overall warming of the earth and rise in the average global temperature

4- melting ice caps and subsequent rise in sea levels

5- warmer climates encourage faster and easier spread of disease carrying insects and animals

how this might relate to tourism:

1- this relates in two ways - a) more tourism means increase in transportation which means more greenhouse gases added into the atmosphere, as you already mentioned. Also, growing tourism calls for increased construction and land development. That can mean more natural land and vegetation cover cleared for building things like more roads, hotels, and consequently more shops and homes for people working in tourist areas. Loss of vegetation cover means a decrease in the number of plants that act as a "carbon sink" i.e. take in carbon dioxide and counter the effects of increasing greenhouse gases.
b) increasing air pollution might have a detrimental effect on tourism, overcrowded cities that have potential as tourist spots may see a decline in the number of tourists if the air quality falls, as this poses increased health risks..

2- severe weather due to changing climates poses many threats to major cities.. structural and property destruction, loss of lives, etc.. The tourist industry may suffer for this as tourists may choose to no longer visit places with high risk of dangerous weather events.

3- higher temperatures can pose health risks too. Tourism patterns may change as people may wish to avoid hotter climates where the risk of heat stroke is higher.

4- rising sea levels threaten to flood coastal areas around the world, many of which include cities with major tourist industries.

5- tourist industries based in warmer climates may struggle with a rise in incidences of fast spreading disease. loss of tourism will be due to international advisories against visiting countries that pose such health risks
