I have this old Lappy that doesnt have a working HDD. So ive been on a quest to get it to boot some OS off a USB drive. This is quite difficult because it doesnt have BIOS support for booting USB. Ive been playing around with linux and GRUB and stuff lately. So what im after is:

A Floppy or CD that BOOTS GRUB and has USB support.
So it Loads USB drivers or something, and then can boot whatever i choose. For Example, if i tell it to boot from the Win98 IO.sys file, it should boot thta way. The only issue i have is, as i have said, that the BIOS doesnt natively support USB booting.

Anyway, Any help is appreciated.
Thanks, Josh.

I've wanted to do the same thing. I was unsuccessful in finding a boot manager that supports USB. The old standby Smart Boot Manager can't boot what the bios can't find. Some of the smaller distros have a boot floppy that can boot USB, like Puppy. http://www.puppyos.com/boot2pup.htm

I understand how to do it in theory. I'll have to try it when I get time.
You need to know little about creating a grub CD
http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/html_node/Making-a-GRUB-bootable-CD-ROM.html
The grub CD will need a initrd that supports USB, as far as I know this isn't the default. So you will have to build the initrd your self.
This is the best howto I could find.

Do a bit of google research. Booting from a floppy isn't any big deal. So you need to find a way to direct the startup routine to the USB. The USB-centric distros may have information on that. Google it!

goto the old Lappy manufactures website and ask their support geeks if there is a bios update.. for what you need.. if the old lappy has USB then they may have updated the bios to boot from it... though it will be usb 1.1 version
