I know the 66' had problems with the engine and it broke down more often but other than that, what is the difference between the years? I really need to know the difference between them to know what pony interior kit to get so also probably need to know if the seats/ interior is any different from each other within the years?

There were no special problems with the 66 engine over the 65. However the 260-289 64 1/2 and 65 had a 5 Bolt Block to Bell Housing Mounting Pattern. The 66 had a 6 Bolt Pattern. The 66 also offered the HI-PO 289 engine that was used in the Hertz and GT 350 models. There was a Cast trim part near the rear tire on the 65 that was not on the 66. It was a fake rear brake air scoop. The 66 speedometers went to 150 MPH on some trim models with gauges instead of Dummy Lights. The grill was different for 66 as was the fuel cap. There were more interior options for 66 than 65. The 6 cylinder had 4 Bolt wheels and the V8 had 5 bolt wheels. The 66 had optional wheels known as rally wheels and had tires rated at 135MPH with a fine red line instead of whitewall. There is more I just don't remember it all. I once owned both a 65 and a 66.

Not much was different - the firstyear of production was actually 64 - they sold mid year in 64 - called a 65 version. 66 was basically the same model - 67 was when they changed headlight buckets and came out with the fastback. I believe the only two motor options in 66 were a straight 6 and a 289 v8 - 64/65 I think only the straight 6 mightve been availible( dont quote me on that) . They had GT versions availble - I think pretty much there were no differences in the 64-66 stang interiors.

64.5. 65 & 66 are but for a few cosmetic differences the exact same car. 100% of the parts are interchangeable.
From the outside the 64.5/65 had a honeycomb style grill, 66 had a brick pattern. the side scoop on 64.5/65 had no horizontal extensions where the 66 did and the gas cap on 64.5/66 had "lugs" around the edge and the 66 had ridges sort of like you have on a dime. Main interior giveaway is the instrument cluster. 64.5/65 had a rectangular gauge package, speedo on top with the other four below. 66 has round with speedo in middle and the other four on plane and two on either side.
In addition, the Falcon, Fairlane, Comet, Maverick and Ranchero were mechanically almost the same vehicles and all share the same shop manual. I paid $75 for 66 Ranchero for parts and I used its engine, tranny, rear end, drums, heater core, window regulators in either my 66 Mustang or my neighbors 65 Maverick.

who told you there was a problem with the engine? there is no difference in the engines or drivetrains. the are the same 289 ci, the only difference was the Calif car got a smog pump in 66.
There was a difference in interiors, the inserts were plain in the 65, and perforated in 66. The Pony interior came out sometime in 65.
the main difference in the bodies was the grill, the 66 has horizontal lines and a free floating pony insert. also the gas cap and hubcaps were different.
added:
the 66 instument panel was first used in the 65 GT, it had the round speedo and gauges.
you can visit the links in my group to see pics of those.

The "Early" 65 (March, 64 to August, 64) was available with a 170 CID Six, 260 V-8 and a 289V V-8. There were only two body styles available: Notch-back and Convertible.
In 65, they dropped the 170 Six for the 200 and the 260 was dropped for a higher output 289. At the model year change in September, 65, the Fastback was introduced.
I could go on and on, but if you check out the link below, you can read it for yourself...
Hope this helps....

SVO man is right about the interior with the gauges etc. Also of note is that the window winders are screw on instead of clip on, and that the dash pad has a slightly different shape. The shape of the seats etc, are the same, so provided you have the colours of the seat trim you like, it will fit, even if it is boxed and tagged as '65. There's a few other minor changes, but that basically covers the interior side of it.

I agree with SVOMAN. There is little difference between the two. i would say at least 95% of the parts are interchangeable.
