I've done it both ways. I was raised Catholic and it doesn't get much more traditional than that (I've been to contemporary Masses, as well). but now I attend a non-denominational church that has, well, edgy/emergent worship.
This is just my personal preference - Catholics you don't need to rant at me, ok? There is a lot of beauty in the Catholic Mass, and the mystic in me loves that.
But I am really experiencing spiritual growth and closeness to God in this modern setting where the messages, art, and music combines cohesively and constantly challenges my brain and my heart to be more like Christ.
Ultimately, I think God will use any diverse means of worship styles that we can imagine to call people unto himself. And that is GOOD!
PS for Blondie B, above: If you haven't attended emergent worship yet, where you may encounter a real rock band or rap music (!), don't knock it -- you would be awed by the hard hitting messages there. They are not "watered down," at all, but they are put into terms that unchurched people can understand and hopefully begin their first steps toward a life with Jesus. Would you be for that?

I don't think its Biblical to do "modern" worship if you mean disobeying God's word. My church is a very conservative Baptist church and we follow God's word, while the Baptist church my parents attend is very, very, liberal and allows woman pastors, deaconess and uses the NIV "version" of the Bible. I don't think they are getting the whole word of God there, I think a modern church is soo afraid of "offending" and being PC they won't call a sin a sin and tell the people this. I think it would be harder for people to attend a "modern" church as they don't really get a sermon, or good quality gospel music. They get a show and a pat on the back.

It is all a matter of personal preference.
I personally like contemporary worship, there seems to be more enthusiasm. I know I am more excited about worshiping and celebrating my relationship with Jesus Christ when the music gets me out of my chair.
I also really appreciate worshiping with different ethnic groups, I'm an old white dude and for the most part white folks don't know how to do church, people of color tend to get a whole lot more excited about there salvation and really enjoy expressing their gratitude to God.
That really hits me where I live because at best I deserve to rot in hell, but by the Grace of God I don't have to.
Amen.

A "church" is a body of people, not a building. I personally like the small buildings better than the big showy ones.

I think it would be harder. I like the old type churches...they had more meaning. I don't care for the modern type churches with all the glitz and glamour.....seems to take away from anything spiritual.
And...that's just my opinion.

You should choose a church with a worship style that you are comfortable with.
For me, that means the use of Les Pauls & tube amps. ;-)
