Sure there are some heavy commandments on the list, but some seem pretty petty compared to the "murder" one. And what is the difference between mortal sin and veniel sin?

well all sin is mortal when it comes to eternal life...
Nobody can keep the 10 commandments or any of the rest of the commandments.
The Bible says that you need to have Christ as your Savior and receive his gift of eternal life.

"Do I have to keep all 10 Commandments in order to get into heaven?" - It couldn't hurt. Seriously as a human I do not know. Only GOD decides who enters heaven, no matter how humans twist their words.
I think as a guide it covers a lot of base human flaws, and as noted makes them more aware they are always present when you wake up.
Keep being a good person, as in good like your parents explained, and you should be fine.
Unfortunately, I do not know differences in types of sins. Sinning in general is usually bad, so one must be worse than the other somehow.
I could suggest web sites - but I'm Catholic, would this be ok? One's the Vatican, and the other is an encyclopedia.

You are expected to love God and love your neighbor, and to be faithful to Christ and his church.

The commandments are there as a guide.

When you see yourself breaking a commandment, it means that you are also probably breaking the law of love, which is THE primary commandment of the new covenant.

And contrary to what many people think, God no longer views all sins as the same.

In the old days, if you broke any part of the law, even the least of it, you broke it all, and you were in big trouble.

Today, we operate under the grace of Christ ... and not under any law.

Jesus is perfectly capable of judging the relative severity of any sin, and Jesus is the only one who might judge anyone to hell.

And since we also have access to all the sacraments of the authentic and universal church, including the sacrament of reconcilation, which is capable of repeatedly absolving us of all our sins, no one needs to live in fear of God's judgment, ever again.

As for your question about mortal vs. venial sin:

Mortal sin is "deadly" sin which causes the soul to become devoid of the grace of God. Absent grace, heaven is highly unlikely.

Venial sin is less serious type of sin that does not result in a complete loss of grace.

Anyone who departs this sphere of existence with at least some grace in their soul is not likely to end up in hell.

Well, the Bible is clear that if you love God then you will keep His commandments. It is not about whether or not we think they are petty...it is about if we love Him enough to honor Him by following them. Then, since we all sin and sin seperates us from God for eternity He sent Jesus as the one and only ever perfect lamb....he ultimate sacrifice. And it says that no one can get to the Father except through Jesus....He is the way to heaven. It says that whoever believes in Jesus and the one who sent him (God) then you can get to heaven...and not a false belief. He knows our hearts. It also says that it is by grace that we are saved through our faith. It is a gift (free, paid for) of God...not by works (you have done nothing and can do nothing to earn it) lest any man should boast. So, you can get to heaven if you break the commandments...by believing in Jesus Christ. However, if you love God then you will try your best to honor Him through following His commmandments.

Hope that answers a little bit of your question!

The thief on the Cross said. When you get to heaven remember me. and Jesus said I tell you the truth that on this day you shall be with me in Paradise. Luke 23: 43. Our sins are paid for .. In Gods eyes sin is sin no matter what you have done and the answer ...Jesus.

Here is what Jesus had to say about it...

Matthew 5:19 (NIV)
Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

You have to believe Jesus is the living Son of God.

John 14:6 -- Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

The only reason "15 ¶ If ye love me, keep my commandments."(John 14:15)
MORE "8 Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.
9 ¶ As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.
10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.
11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.
12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.
13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you."(John 15:8-14)
In Rev 12 we see that God's people keep the commandments.
"17 And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ."(Rev 12:17)
In Rev 14 we see those who worship the beast believing they are worshipping God contrasted with the true worshipers of God.
"12 Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus."(Rev 14:12)
When you give your life to God, He causes a change in you. The chain that holds you to sin is broken (sinful nature) and God gives you a new nature that loves Him.
"10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:"(Heb 8:10) Laws now put in us, not out somewhere on stone that we strive to keep but cann't.
"26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.
27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.
28 And ye shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; and ye shall be my people, and I will be your God."(Eze 36:26-28)
When you give your life to Christ, He will cause you to be one of His people and He will do the work in you and He will be your God!
God bless you as you seek God with the whole heart!
P.S. We are saved by Grace to good works "17 ¶ Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled."(Matt 5:17-18)
AND "13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me"(Phil 4:13)
AND "With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible"(Matt 19:26)
You need to be born again!
sin is a natural part of you from birth
sin is a choice once you give your life to Christ and are born again.
sin is trangressing God's law - without the law there is no sin -If God could have done away with the law, Christ would not have needed to die!

There are two ways to heaven. First, keep ALL the commandments and never break one law. Or accept Christ for the forgiveness of all sins.
If it were works of the law that gained salvation, how would you ever know there were enough? Who would set the arbitrary line? Would you ever feel secure in your walk?
Salvation via works is an absolutely false concept. How will you EVER know that you have done enough good, or if it will balance out the bad?

The truth is, before you accept Jesus as Savior, none of your good deeds are taken in to account, only the sin you have committed in violation to the law. After you accept Jesus as your Savior, your sins are deleted from the record and only the good you do in the Spirit remains. (1 Cor. 3)

You cannot buy your way into heaven with tithes, keeping of traditions or rules, rituals, singing in the choir or good deeds. THAT is why Jesus had to come and die in our place.

Titus 3:5
Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us.

2 Timothy 1:9
Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began

There is only one way to heaven and that is through the finished redemptive work of Jesus Christ.

John 10:9
Jesus said, "I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture."

Acts 4:12
Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

Romans 5:9
Much more then, being now justified by [Jesus'] blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.

The good news is, the gift of salvation is just that--a gift--it is free. If you try to buy the gift, you will never be able to afford it, so all you need to do is accept it and say, "thank you."

Ephesians 2:8-9
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God. Not of works, lest any man should boast.
