Does it sound crazy to have an apprenticeship where you're not allowed to tattoo? The guy who's willing to take me on as an apprentice is charging me 4,500 and I have to be in the shop open to close and do all the normal apprentice stuff. The thing is, I will NOT be allowed to tattoo at all, anyone or even fake skin, untill the money is paid in full. And I will not be taught how to tattoo. I will only be allowed to watch, basically be his shadow. So if I make payments and it's paid in full after two years, thats when I'm allowed to start tattoong. I have to be at the shop scrubbing tubes, helping customers, and all that stuff that whole time though, every day it's open, open to close. When I watch him tattoo he won't even explain what he's doing untill the money is paid in full! Does that Sound unfair?

you should speak to other artists about their apprenticeships and find out what the norm is. i do know that most apprentices are required to be the grunts and do EVERYTHING short of doing the actual tattoos. if it doesn't sound right to you then you should move on and find something else that seems more straightforward.

You should seriously consider going to another shop! You're getting ripped off and he's basically getting paid to have a shop monkey do all his dirty work for him.

It almost always takes under two years to become a full time tattoo artist with an apprenticeship... some great artists are even ready for clients after six months!

Don't waste your money on this guy/shop! There's actually quite a few shops that will let you apprentice for free or let you pay it off once you start actually tattooing.

RIP OFF!

I think that you are getting ripped off.

Tattooing is really popular so some unscrupulous artists will try to make people pay money for years of slave labour. However real artists are usually really open to have an apprentice come in and start tattooing (even if they're just tattooing grapefruit!) while actually doing apprentice duties.

Think of it this way. You are likely going to work 4000 hours over the next two years (for free) and you have to pay $4500 to work like a slave while not learning anything. That doesn't sound like a very good deal to me!

What is to stop him from taking your money, taking two years of your life and then not teaching you a thing?

I suggest that you check out another guy or shop. But make sure you have a good portfolio of your artwork ready for him to see. Paying money to be an apprentice is not worth it. A geniune artist will normally take you in for free or even pay you a little allowance if you are lucky. A quick witted businessman will ask you to pay him money. You can use the following link as a quide to work towards being a professional tattoo artist.

damnnn hes asking for alot of money too. Sound kinda fishy and not right, he should be teaching you somethings along the way as you the money. Or maybe he just believes its right to teach you when you fully pay him, and he will probably teach you alott after.
