i personally like:
german shepherds, dobermans, belgian shepherds and malinoise, labs, pitt bulls, danes and mastiffs.
german shepherds - very family attached, intelligent, dog and stranger aggressive unless well socialized before 12 weeks old.
doberman and belgian balinoise - same as german shepherd, be sure to socialize well and there will be no problem of "oh my god!! a dangerous dog!!!" lol.
belgian shepherds - i'm not sure, but i think they're similar to the shepherd, but less aggressive, though more hairy
great danes - very awkward as puppies and young adults, but once grown and half way trained, they are very lazy, and laid back because they're bodies are just too big to have much energy, lol.
mastiffs - same as danes, though more dog/stranger aggressive unless socialized.
pitt bulls - very happy dogs, if socialized well they love strangers and dogs - IF SOCIALIZED WELL!!! - if not socialized, they're like any other dog and are aggressive and skittish.
if you don't like any of these, you can check out this website
http://animal.discovery.com/breedselector/dogselectorindex.do
way to go for not getting one before you're ready!!! if only all ppl were like that!
it has all recognized breeds, their temperments, health issues, grooming requirements, history, etc.

The most highly recommend family dog is the lab, they're very gentle, loyal, and have a great temperament. German Shepherds are quite good dogs as well, however they tend to be a 1 person dog, they get really attached to one person. I'd always suggest getting a mix breed when the time comes, and from a shelter, they make excellent pets.

My pick is the Bernese Mountain dog. They aren't as big as a Great Dane, but stand up to 27" at the shoulder.

They are affectionate, loyal, faithful, stable and intelligent. They are very friendly to people, and other dogs. They often get along well with other pets such as cats, horses, etc. As with any dog, they need to be socialized as a pup. They are very trainable provided the owner is patient and consistent in training. They do not respond well to harsh treatment, but are very willing to please and work well for praise and treats.
If you decide on a Berner, make sure you get a pup from a reputable breeder.
Good Luck in your search. You can't go wrong with a Berner:)

The largest dog breed i have heard of is from Scotland. Forgot the precise name, though.
If you are thinking about getting a Laborador, check to see if the dog's chest is large. That's a sign of a water dog.

Goldendoodle. Golden retriever/poodle cross. They are THE CUTEST dogs ever, they don't shed, they're hypoallergenic and they are calm but not lazy, indoor OR outdoor dogs, aren't prone to any diseases in general (like cocker spaniels are prone to ear infections) and are easily trainable. They're amazing!!!!!! And ADORABLE.
