I have a skunk in my window well right now and I want to kill it without it spraying. Years ago I read an article in the newspaper about a skunk getting into a family's basement and spraying, spreading it's stink via central air. It caused tens of thousands of dollars in damage, and homeowners insurance didn't cover it. I'm afraid even a licensed trapper will cause it to spray from fear, so i want to poison it to death then call someone to pull it out. Also it is going nuts right now trying to get out, so i'm affraid that it might spray just from being stuck in there overnight. So i need poison. Any thought?

Let me add, it's already in the window well so steps to deter or keep skunks out i.e. ammonia won't get it to leave, it is stuck. Other than poison how can i get this thing out. I live in a townhouse in a highly populated area so shooting it might scare the neighbors, be dangerous, and discharging a firearm within city limits is against the law.

I'm completely open to other ideas other than poison, but putting a trap in the window well will probably cause it to spray, all around my basement where the central air is, and next to the AC unit. Plus you then have to pull the trap out. If i were to poison it i would drop food with poison directly into the window well from above. So unless stupid kids are playing in my window well which is 5 feet deep, eating random things they find they'll be fine. And if they do that's when Darwin's thoughts come into play

Rat poison is not the answer.
Go to your local Animal Regulation (The Pound) and rent a small live animal trap. You can bait it with whatever they suggest, and you can call them to pick it up. Put the trap in an area you can hose off. If the skunk sprays, pour tomato juice on the area, let sit for 2 hours, and hose it off.
More kids and pets have been poisoned (some die) by accidently ingesting rat poison. If you catch the neighbor's cat in a live trap, you can turn it loose without it being harmed.
You don't want poison.

A death by poison is very very very very cruel. It takes them a long time to die and it can be excruciating.
Can the skunk actually get into your house? If not, what are you so concerned about? Just let him leave.
If you really need him gone, hire a trapper who specializes in non-lethal removal of animals. They'll know what they're doing. He can be live trapped and relocated to a more appropriate location.
If you're considering using a trapper to catch him with a kill trap, remember that there are laws regarding these in urban areas and it may very be illegal, and aside from that they are very cruel and usualy don't kill the animal outright, they just leave them to linger in agony, and the trapper comes along to shoot them, stomp on them, or bludgeon them to death.

why not contact a wild-life rehabilitator + ask if they can give it a knock out dart then take it out ? They must know of ways to remove the skunk. Why not try that first before you decide to permenantly remove it ? I couldn't possibly poison any animal.
If its in your window well, make sure your window is shut properly + wont open. Board it up temporarily. Until the skunk is removed. As long as it isn't near your furnace or A.C. the smell shouldn't circulate throughout your house.
After skunk is removed, seal up that window well with wire so no other animal gets into it.

Set up a humane trap. They have them for strays and squirrels. If you don't want to pay for it then call a wildlife rescue. Hopefully they will be able to help you.
This is a pretty inappropriate place to post about poisoning animals because it is a pet forum. It's totally unnecessary to kill the skunk and I think it's cruel. The skunk is outside because it's wild. It isn't the animals fault that your home was built in it's environment. Please take care of it humanely or just learn to live with it.

Honestly, I would just call animal control, they are trained to remove pests with as little stress as possible. Just explain your concern and Im sure they will do the best they can. If you were to get bit in the process of putting poison out when the animal is all ready trapped and under stress, you run the risk of rabies and who knows what. Please let the pros handle it, they can do it safely for the both of you.

very extreme quantities can kill rats. the concentration of fluoride in toothpaste is one thousand areas in line with million (a million area in line with million in water). that is magnitudes extra centred in rat poison--like 50% via weight. which isn't something new--citric acid is in apple juice and soda, yet great centred citric acid might desire to do a TON of harm. each little thing is approximately concentration.

GENTLY lower a ladder down, and let it climb out on its own, then call a trapper and put guards on your window wells.
The key word is GENTLY, so you don't scare it.

You can discourage it by placing ammonia around the area. They don't like it. Place the ammonia soaked cloths in plastic bags. Leave the bags slightly opened and placed in the places around your home where you DON'T want them.
I live in the country and use this method to keep them out from under our barn.

A hardware store I would guess. Be careful though, skunks often spray post-mortem.
