I live in australia, and i really want to travel in my gap year after college, i thought about going to new york, because i haven't been there before, is it safe to travel there alone?

yes. there are very few unsafe areas on NYC anymore, and those are generally off the beaten tourist/visitor path.

There are, actually, a fair number of dodgy areas in NYC. That's not to say that the entire city is unsafe but I'd be very careful where I went, especially alone and/or after dark. As an example, I'd avoid Bedford-Stuyvesant and Hunts Point at all costs.

Anywhere away from large groups of people should be avoided and be careful of the Electric Sewer (the Subway) at night.

Be aware that there are, as in any large city, random lunatics you might encounter anytime and anyplace.

BTW, NYC is crazy expensive, insanely crowded and traffic is absurd.

My favorite thing about NYC is seeing it grow smaller in my rearview mirror.

i would go but not alone. its pretty safe but no where is really safe anymore to go alone no mater where you are in the world.

but i love NYC. i used to live an hour away and went all of the time. its the best place in the world. i think.
