Ruger M77 Compact rifle in .243 Winchester. Also the same rifle in .308 caliber. This will be used for occasionally hunting deer but mostly for target shooting at the range.

I have rifles chambered for both calibers. None-however are in the Ruger 77 compact.

For all around shooting the .308 is really a better choice. Better grain selections. And less expensive to buy.

Either are more than adequate for deer hunting. For varmint hunting the .243 has a slight edge though.

Have been shooting for numerous years. And no desire to get into a confrontation. But can say without any equivocations forget about one being a better “brush gun”.

Any caliber of hunting bullet that hits a limb or anything else prior to the projected target will definitely be deflected. No exceptions. Ask any trained military sniper!

Ruger M77 Compact rifle .243 Winchester-
Pros: slightly less recoil. Slightly flatter trajectory.
308: Pros: Accuracy has been proven in 1000 yd. matches. Popular sniper round. Much larger choice of bullet weights. Bucks the wind better.
I would choose the 308 if I was going to be using one of the two for deer hunting.

243 is a great gun for target shooting and deer hunting, if you're hunting in open fields. But it's not a brush gun. Stick to the open fields.

308 is a great all around rifle. You can venture into a semi wooded area without too much trouble and you can use it in the open fields.

If you're doing a lot of target shooting the 308 will be a little more expensive for rounds.

Hope this helps

The .243 is a .308 necked down to .24 caliber and considered the 'minimum' deer gun. The .308 will serve you better overall.

Best.

Ruger's are nice. Lifetime warranty, no questions asked. Compact is a nice model, don't expect target rifle size groups (sub 1" groups at 100 yards.)

Definately the .308. As stated before, ammo choices are greater. Especially when surplus military ammo is available dirt cheap for plinking.

I have always been a fan of the 308, Mainly because their are more types of ammo for it.
As to the pro's and con's of a compact rifle
The pro's: Lighter than full size, Easier to drag thru the woods
The con's: Lighter weight makes more felt recoil, Shorter barrels decrease accuracy and speed some,
At what ranges are most of you hunting. If your shots will not likely be any further than 400-500 yards the compact would be a great rifle. For longer ranges a longer barrel will help some.

Best choice for the purpose you intend to use it for would be the 308.*
