I hear this smack everytime they compare the two Ali's. I admit, I can see the difference. What caused this aside from the layoff? Anything to do with his training routine? I really doubt that, but can I get your opinions?

Brother's and sister's, listen
Clay had good movement in the ring, and when he came back as Ali he was a more reserved fighter. Which made him a smarter fighter, you don't have dance every round to show the fans how skillful you are, use it when you need it. Have you folk's ever checked out some of the films and noticed that his hands became a lot faster, it is a natural occurrence in boxer's.
To compensate for the slowing of the foot speed , they naturally step up the hand speed. Just like a person who has Lose's eyesight . develope's heightened earing, etc. The man feel into a comfortable mode of fighting, remember the shaver's fight he had real quick foot movement in spurts, the Frazier episodes as well. So you see it wasn't like the man aged 10yrs. in 3yrs. he just rearranged his style and technique

First of all Muhammad was never a slacker. For every fight he trained day and night so that he could be at his best when the time came. For the fight against Larry Holmes for example he lost 30 pounds by dieting and constant exercise.

His prime years were unfairly taken from him. The ages that he would've been at his best, with his body in top condition, also his emotional state. With so many things to worry about like, trials, lawyers, jail, Islam, giving speeches(his job while exiled), Ali just couldn't work up to his full potential thus holding him back.
So when he returned he just wasn't the same young fast Cassius Clay who could throw 12 accurate punches in less than 3 seconds, and would leave every single fight without even a scratch on the lips. He was 30 years old. His prime was over.
The new Ali however did have some qualities over Clay; he was more experienced, more intelligence, and a body as if made of steel. But what always made him stand out he always kept which was his ability to apply psychological damage to his opponent before and during the fight.

Ali always worked very hard though, he was first to arrive at the Gym and the last one to leave. Even as a kid he used to ask his brother to throw rocks at him so that he could dodge em.(can you believe it?!)

I'm eternally grateful to the man who robbed his bike

Well, Ali was almost 30 years old when he came back from the exile so age might had something to do with it. And yes, Ali kinda slackened in training during his "second coming". As Cassius Clay, he never stopped running everyday and really enjoyed training, but as Muhammad Ali in the later years, he seemed to have this disdain for training. Larry Holmes attested to this when he disclosed that during the first Frazier fight Ali was in training camp for 8 weeks but didn't "actually" train 'til the last 2 weeks. He relied more on his skills, smarts and his big heart and kinda neglected physical preparations.

The 3 1/2 year layoff was the difference. You can work out in the gym all you want but live action is what he needed and was not allowed to have. We will never know just how great he could have been. If he had fought Frazier during the layoff years, he would have destroyed Frazier within 5 rounds.

The only difference I can see would be age, Clay was younger and Ali was older, as for legs, they had the same leges, just different aged so you can honestly say that they had teh same legs.

Caused by 3 years of inactivity. Added weight. Poor training methods.

The older Ali was better. He was bigger, stronger, smarter, hit much harder, and corrected his major inside fighting and jabbing flaws. For all that, he gave up a little speed.
