Doctors and dentists are small businesses. Small businesses are a big source of breaches of employment laws. We don't hear about it because in fact only 1 or 2 people are affected at any time.
Unpaid overtime is a big issue in many work places, particularly as senior staff are under pressure to work longer hours. However a dentist is making money from each extra customer that they see.
People who don't treat others with respect will cheat you in many ways. This guy is a dentist and so earns a lot of money, and is so greedy he will cheat everyone.
Experience is only part of the whole thing, you will also need a reference when you go to find a new job. A guy like this could force you to work long hours, give you a hard time then when you complain and decide to leave give you a bad reference.
The solution is to endure the current situation long enough to get enough experience to find a better job.
If however you want to try and deal with the issue of overtime, then you should try and deal with it in the simplest possible way. Keep track of your hours and put a written claim in for the time you worked. Best if all staff sign it together.
This way you are not getting into an argument, simply making a claim for pay, which being in writing leaves no room for misunderstanding.

I know if your salary is over a certain amount you are considered to be an overtime exempt employee. I know where I live if you are paid over 24000 a year you are considered overtime exempt so you may want to go to the labor board site and see if it is the same. I really don't know about being paid on a certain date but I know where i work they started to pay all of their employees who did not have direct deposit a couple of days after the normal pay day. I would suggest start looking for another entry level position with another dentist. It may take some time but hang in there and try not to make many waves at your current job. If you do confront your boss he may make it intolerable to work there or find something small to fire you for. Wish I could be of more help.

By law he has to pay you on a regular basis. He CAN NOT make payday later than planned. If it is a holiday then he has to pay you a day earlier. You paycheck has to be available to you on a business day so you are able to cash it. Overtime has to be paid unless you fall into certain categories (which you don't) or unless you are told up front that you are required to work overtime without extra pay. Confront him. You may be new on the job but you have to stand up for yourself. If he gets mad and fires you - get a lawyer because he can not fire you for confronting him about breaking the law. If he says get out, go straight to the nearest unemployment office and let them know what happened and then call a lawyer. You have a child so you can not work at a job where you may or may not get paid on time - confront him.

Put in a complaint with your local Government's labour board/branch.
Stick it out for three months and then start applying else where like crazy. Ask around to see who has a good reputation for employment. Sometimes the larger dental clinics are better run. See if any reputable employment agencies do placements in your field and at least register there.
(My own cousin quit her job as a medical secretary with a doctor's office because the doctor started coming on to her. She says that these offices are like small businesses where the owner does not have decent managerial training. She has worked at the hospital ever since).
I hope this helps. You deserve better!

First secure your ability to meet your financial obligations.
This is your first job and you can not have it perfect. Any other job would also have some undesirable complications .
According to texas labor laws; an employee can not be required to work more than two hours without a break and more than four hours without a lunch break. Nor more than eight hours per day or forty hours per week without additional compensation - either overtime pay or time off later in the pay period. Abusive Violations can be reported to the texas labor commission - ask at the social security employment office.
Be careful - nobody knows better than you about what you prefer to do.
Perhaps you can negotiate to come in late in the morning, to compensate having worked late - politics my friend politics.

Wow... that's a tough one. Usually no diploma does not equate with good job. You might try something where expertise is more important than formal education. For example, jobs in computer repair, tech support and the like. You could try sales person, mechanic, or call desk agent. Or, if you are looking for summer-type job, look in retail. The key is, what can you do that no other high-school dropout can do? Good Luck

Be patient, get experience.
DOCUMENT EVERYTHING!
Keep track of OT hours that should have been paid, pay days, etc.
When it comes time to quit and you've already found a new job, there's usually a state employment agency that will help you out with this.
