I'm cross-posting this from a previous answer, but hope you'll find it useful tool:
One great way is to work up to pull-ups is to practice with a flexed arm hang. Using your feet, get into pull up position on a pull up bar and time how long you can hold yourself up. Then every day, try to increase that amount of time by a few seconds. Once you're up to a minute or so, it's time to try for a real pull-up. (If you don't have a pull-up bar in your house, you can use a door frame -- it's tough, but will work your hands and fingers too.)
There are also machines at many gyms where you can practice doing pull-ups with your knees on a platform that will hold some of your weight. On those machines, decrease the amount of weight the machine is holding each day until you can do them unsupported.
Push-ups don't use exactly the same muscles, but won't hurt in your quest to build overall strength. Do them slowly to maximize the impact.
Finally, it may not be possible for you, but what worked for me was rock-climbing. I hadn't been able to do a pull-up since before I hit puberty, but after a year of going to the climbing gym, now I can do three. :)
Good luck!

I've seen it recommended in a couple of places that beginners start pulling up by standing on a chair or box and gradually relying less and less on the box to support them. I think that's what you should do. Eventually, you should be able to do it without any support from below. Good luck!

I remember when i couldn't do any during PE...kinda embarrassing.
So what did i do...I went behind my grampa's garage where there was a old pipe which was perfect for pull ups and just started trying them over and over. Until i finally pulled myself up.
Another thing to do is get a friend and have them stand behind stand behind you and hold you up by your ankles while you pull yourself up. The effort will be cut in half. it's a start.

Do girl push ups (that's what my gym teacher called them, I'm not sexist) then move up to regular push ups, then gradually you will be able to do pull ups. I used to be able to do 50 when I was in grade school, and I don't know how the hell I did that.
