I have to write a three paragraph essay explaining what Qumran and the Essenes were, what the Dead Sea Scrolls are, and why they are important. Any ideas for this? Im not looking for any answers, but anything that can help me out? This isnt in my text book.

The Dead Sea Scroll contain:
- All of the books of the Old Testament (Hebrew scriptures) except Esther
- Several books that never became part of the Hebrew Scriptures
- Numerous commentaries on the Scriptures
- Books having to do with
.....- Community life
.....- Rules for living
.....- Temple worship
.....- Other matters
There are many duplicates. Fourteen copies of Deuteronomy have been found and two of Isaiah.
The scrolls are important because they:
- Testify to the accuracy of the people who copied and recopied the Scriptures over the centuries. Despite minor errors, they show us that the Old Testament has not changed since it was compiled.
- Throw light on beliefs and customs in Palestine during times between the Old and New Testamants. There was far more diversity among the Jews than had been thought.

The dead sea scrolls are the first branch off from christianity. The first seperate group.
You have to understand that there are 100's upon thousands of texts written about Jesus and that time period. Also his teachings where vague, as where the prophicies and most other things from that time. (if they werent the romans would have destroyed them) Eventually when Rome adopted what is known as Catholicism Christianity moved from the faith of slaves and degenerates (which is what it generally was at the time in comparison with the rest of the world) To being a state religion. It was no longer phesable (sp?) to have 100000000 different words of god. So part of the deal was that they had to choose what they felt where the "real" words of God. Countless txts where reviwed and looked at and only a handful where chosen. (this is part of why the Muslims dont like the bible.... it wasnt picked by mid easterners.) The dead sea scrolls..... now I am trying to remember. They are one of 2 things.
Books rejected by the council. Or the bible assembled by the first offshot of christianity which was immediately quenched after Catholicism asscended.
Both are true. but one set is kept in the vatican, the other is the dead sea scrolls. I know they are both important, and one contains... ok get this "The Gospel of Jesus Christ". As in he may have acctually written....in his own words what happened. Allegedly he says that pursuing a universalist religion is wrong. Not a Sin but wrong. And he is said to state something to the point of... "seek not to convert those who do not belive if they are not willing. But worry not for their souls becuse so long as they belive a way that is close to my word and the words of my father, then they also worship me and shall be saved"
Essentially it says that the persecution of heathens and pagans around the world is close to heresy.
I cant gurentee how accurate becuse I havent talked about it in awhile. in another book Jesus says that hell is not forever.
Theres a lot of stuff that goes against modern beliefs.
I know in.... LA or sandiego they are having an exhibit of the acctual documents. There would be information on it there.
