A) When you are a child you bowl a 37. Your parents clap and hug you and buy you a cupcake and then say "you'll do even better next time"

or

B) As an adult, you don't throw a 300 game, so the bowling lane manager yells at you and breaks one of your fingers (not on your bowling hand)

They are not mutually exclusive, but I would say Scenario B is more relevant to your point. Parents do indeed behave like that with little kids, but the bowling lane manager is clearly fictional. Anyone who acted like that would not have very many people in his bowling alley. And a God who punished as arbitrarily as Christians seem to believe would not have many people in heaven.

"A" is closer to Christian theology, since we are dealing with a question of someone doing the best they can, and recieving grace for the rest of the points they did not earn, due to their lack of ability.

"Punishment" would only come into the equation in the case of a deliberate infraction, for example, the child takes the chalk, and deliberately grinds it into the face of another player, while his parents and the bowling lane manager are telling him not to do it!

Definitely B but then if you continue to mess up, the manager kicks you out of the bowling alley forever. The bowling alley you get sent to has all the nastiest shoes, your bowling partners all bite you, and the balls are all square.

This is why the Bible will be remembered for years to come and anything you write will not.
That is the worst metaphor I have ever seen.
