Right now there's the nouveau rich .... the direct descendants of the gombeen men (look it up). Awful clothes with expensive designer labels, property in Spain, no eye for art, must have a return on their investment (hence property in Spain instead of supporting artists in their own country). Basically afraid to be back where they were before their money made it all better.

Then the impoverished artists - live well but way beyond their means. Spend more on books, films and art materials then they do on food. Get clothes from secondhand shops. Love the Internet! Can just about make the rent/mortgage. Can talk to all other social strata, as necessity is the mother of invention after all.

Then there are the crawlers. They can't figure out to be the nouveau rich. Basically they bumlick either of the above. Think of them as either talentless bull **** artists or nouveau rich who never got lucky or who didn't have what it takes to acquire the dosh.

Of course these overlap, how could they not? Crawlers that win the lottery, for example. Or black sheep in nouveau rich families.

I'm forgetting the outsiders who come in, from foreign parts, who marry into any of the above. They add interesting spice to the social mix.

The Old Rich
the New Rich
the politicians (half and half of the above)
the "professionals" (i.e. anybody with a university education)
the small entrepreneurs
clerical workers
industrial workers
people with no money at all
people with no money at all who don't even own the council flat/house they live in
"travelers", formerly known as "tinkers" form the absolute underclass together with homeless people.

Artists are in between all of them, depending on their degree of success (especially financial). These days it's only the money that counts.
I left out the old Anglo-Irish nobility because most of them are not part of Irish society, them being "British"

Pretty much the same as most of Western Europe but with greater movement between the classes. Money will open any door.
