Let's pretend you're one of those uneducated people who gets onto Yahoo answers. You don't know the first thing about shelters, breeding or anything, but you want to breed your Lhasa-poo. You're naive. (Use your imagination now...) So you post a question asking:

How much can I sell a Lhasa-poo and Pomeranian's puppies for?

Are you more likely to respond to:

A) You idiot! Why are you breeding your dog? You should be ashamed, putting more unwanted puppies out there to die in shelters. You are a heartless whale. Go get yourself educated. I hope your dog bites you.

or

B) It's great that you're interested in breeding your dog, but you might want to do a little bit of research first. There are a lot of puppies and dogs out there looking for homes already in shelters... you might look into doing foster care and help rehabilitate some dogs for other people to adopt. (Insert some more helpful knowledge here)

I do not think they would respond to either type of answer. They are not looking to hear that they should research first, they are only looking for a quick solution to whatever problem they are experiencing.
People asking those types of questions do not want to hear what is wrong with what they are doing, they only want validations and quick fixes and they are usually pretty quick to tell people to keep their opinions to themselves.

Part of it is in the way the question is asked. part of it is in the way the asker interprets teh answers. I personally want to see a middle of the road option there. No need to call a person an idiot, unless they start with the name calling. But they do need to know the harsh realities of breeding. They need to know the death, misery, and plain truth aobut what irresponsible breeding can do. They need to be told to spend at least two months as a rescue or shelter volunteer before trying to use their dogs reproductive organs at ATM's. There are more of the "I'm gonna do this, and I want you to 'Amen' it" types than there are people that truly want to learn.

ADDED: To Me-ow- Problem is, if these theoretical puppies take up 5 homes, there are 5 homes dogs already in shelters aren't going to get. Those five are going to be killed so that the otehr five can live. And usually, the new pups do NOT stay in homes for the rest of their lives. Why? Because the uneducated breeder doesn't do home checks and really doesn't care what happens to the pups beyond getting paid.

obv. people are going to tell you you did not do enough research and your dogs will not qualify for responsible and professional breeding, but more for "back yard breeding".. then theyll tell you DONT DO THAT and to get your pooches neutured and spayed to prevent overpopulation *rolls eyes* n/s is cruel and they only want these dogs eliminated becuase they dont equal money! but then have the nerve to turn around and say its the unexperienced breeders who are naive, greedy, and only care about the money and not bettering the breed.

go ahead and breed- YOU shouldnt be limited because other owners and back yard breeders are irresponsible!!!

most of the dogs in shelters are MUTTS *not* purebreds! people will always want purebreds whether they are show quality or just pet quality!!! ecause some people are less educated about a certain breed and could really care less!

and if theres anyone out there who will accuse a breeder of just being" in it for the money" and not to "better the breed" is a liar-- what person ISNT breeding for the money? otherwise theyd be selling the breeds for much cheaper than what they go for.

educated breeders get upset because they dont want to mistakenly waste money on getting a stud dog who doesnt have the right papers and isnt of the champion bloodline. WHY? because that means less money for the breeder when its time for him to show the dog and resale- remember this is the breeder who only supposedly cares about the well being of the breed right? wink wink

FYI, there are also wonderful purebred dogs out there that arent registered with papers because of something stupid- like an off color coat or cropped ears- but it doesnt make them any less of a dog- or less behaved.

I've become quite disheartened and sickened by the ignorance and stupidity of most of these types questions (and the individuals who ask them)

Lately, when I see a question that pertains to breeding, I'll head over to some innocuous category like Baby Names or Etiquette.

I don't think I've given up, but I definitely am taking a break. I can only handle so much ignorance in this world without giving up hope.

Good hypothetical.

Personally, I'd start by asking why they think they want to breed these two animals.
Then ask if they have done all the health tests.
Then ask if they are willing to lose the dam and/or the entire litter if there are complications.
Then ask if they have the financial resources for all the vet bills involved.
Then ask if they are willing to take on the legal obligations and liabilities that go with breeding.

Then I would refer them to the following two websites:
http://www.learntobreed.com/
http://www.k9web.com/dog-faqs/breeding.html

Me? I'm one of those who LIKES blunt cold hard truth.

If I'm being an idiot ...TELL me. That way I can stop and take a look at the situation and decide whether change is in order.

Personally... I HATE qualifiers like:

"boy, it'd be nice if you"
"you might want to"
"here are some things you'll want to consider"

etc... just cut to the chase and say... "Why are you breeding your dog when 1000's of animals are dying everyday?" And I will tell you why.

"putting more unwanted puppies out there to die in shelters" actually if you find good homes for them then its different. But I dont like people breeding mixed dogs only purebreed I like... I think that people need to fix their dogs so it wont be anymore accidents of unwanted puppes.

I'd probably respond best to "OMG THAT WULD BE SOOOO CUUUUUTE" because, come on, that's what happens.

I like the point you make - but it's important to have a range of responses so the person knows how serious the situation is and other would-be breeders can see it as well.

if i were an uneducated breeder, pet owner, or anything of the sort...i would first research my dog or any prospective dog and i wouldnt breed my mix breed aka mutt in the first place. it doesnt take a genius to figure out that you shouldnt be breeding mutts!

Look...if people are so clueless that they don't know enough to know that they don't know...there is NO helping them!!!

I know nil about auto repair, but I don't get on here and say " I just yanked some tube thingies out frim under my car hood...what do I do now?"

People know that there is awrong way just from reading other questions. You would not have to be on here 5 sec to know that....but they don't care and want to take the easy route to get that easy money!

Idiots. Plain and simple.
