Not a thing. People just like to act like snobs about ketchup and steak. These same snobs slop ketchup all over a hamburger but somehow only A-1 will do for steak. It's funny. Just keep using ketchup.

Just as everyone else said, if the steak is done well, it shouldn't need enhanced flavoring.
That being said, it's also frowned upon because ketchup is a very strong flavor and not only does not "enhance" the taste of the meat, but moreso covers the actual flavor of the meat.
That's why things like A-1 are more encouraged than ketchup. It's created to flavor the meat, but not completely overpower the taste.

Nothing wrong with ketchup on steak, especially on a steak sandwich. But if you're eating steak at a restaurant, it's almost insulting to the chef. I guess chefs think you shouldn't need to enhance their steak at all, because it's already perfect.

A great steak shouldn't need any marinating or sauce - so they say. But I love my steaks with au Poivre sauce or Bernaise sauce, so I guess that throws that theory in the lake. As I personally would NEVER dream of putting ketchup on a great steak - I think that some people truly like it that way...rules or no rules! To each their own!

When my father was alive he was a professional chef.
He always said it was an insult to his steak if we added steak sauce or ketchup. In his mind, if a steak was cooked to perfection it needed no condiments.
I grew up thinking this and to this day I only put sauce on my steak if it is not cooked to my liking....I like it rare, so if I get it any other way and don't have time to way for them to cook another one, I sauce it up!

Technically, there is nothing wrong with it. But as any good cook will tell you, if it is a good steak and cooked properly, then it should be able to stand on its own without the help of ketchup.

Ketchup belongs on "Dollar Menu" burgers at fast food joints, not on finely cooked and seasoned steaks. Once you try tasting well prepared dishes and not covering up the natural flavors your palate will come to thank you. I take it that the OP may not be a sophisticated diner?
