When working with Mac programs I read a lot about the commands on the keyboard, are those the F Keys?

I'm stumped. Did you read this in the user guide for an application (program)? Maybe it says "command key". That would be the one with the Apple logo and a weird squiggle that looks like ... well, what the heck is it? Maybe a 4 loop freeway exit area. Holding the command key while you press another key will activate certain results.
