ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Orange County deputy who was struck by a hit-and-run driver on Interstate 4 on Tuesday died Wednesday night.

Orange County Sheriff Kevin Beary announced that Deputy Michael Callin was removed from life support and died at 7:25 p.m., WESH 2 News reported.Beary also said that in addition to his severe leg injuries, Callin suffered serious brain damage from the collision.Police arrested a man on Wednesday who they said ran down Callin on Tuesday. The suspect left the Orlando Police Department just before 5 a.m. to be transported to the Orange County Jail. He was found just after midnight and officials said he's responsible for running over Callin at I-4 and Kirkman Road near Universal Studios.
Officials said on Wednesday that Callin's leg was amputated below his knee.

Before Callin's death, Allan Barahona, 19, of Orlando, was facing charges of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest. He was found at an address in the 5500 block of Cortez Drive in Pine Hills.

"He is from Honduras, but he has been living in the States for quite awhile. His driving record, from what I understand, is pretty bad, and he has multiple suspensions. I don't know how many, but from what I understand, quite a few," Orlando Police Department Lt. Brian Gilliam said.

Barahona was booked into the Orange County Jail.

The incident closed down I-4 at Universal Orlando on Tuesday afternoon and armed officers searched every car leaving the park while they looked for the driver.

"I just got off of work, and all I want to do is go home but I can't," one driver said.

"It's a little odd to see the guns drawn and everything, but I can appreciate what they're doing," another driver said.

Law enforcement officials have been keeping a vigil at Orlando Regional Medical Center, where Callin, 26, underwent two surgeries. Adam Pierce, who was shot and paralyzed while searching for a drug suspect last October, stopped by to offer his support.

"From the times that we did work together, he was a hard-working guy. He's not one of these typical gung-ho cops that everyone sees. He's a laid-back guy. He does his job. He works hard, and he's a good guy. We're all hoping that he can come out of this better than I did and make it back to work full-time," Pierce said.

Callin was a four-year veteran of the Orange County Sheriff's Office, and he came from a law enforcement family. His father is a 27-year veteran of the department and his sister is a student at the police academy. http://www.wesh.com/news/9613306/detail.html

They kill people all the time, mainly with drugs sold, we need to regulate the border so we know who the heck is coming here. I don't want durg dealers, gangs, rapists, murderers, and pedofiles coming here. I don't care if 99% are hard working law biding people, it would still worry me about that 1%. People are so backward on here, I earned the right as a citizen so I should have the right to know who the heck is coming in my country.

What if one was a pedofile? I wouldn't know until its too late and thats the issue, stuff like this is happening everyday but nothing is being done to prevent it. Regulate the borders.

There was a 26 year shot by illegals not too long in my town. They were deported.

That happened in 2006, and Barahona was convicted of manslaughter yesterday. He will be sentenced November 16th.
An Orange County jury found a 20-year-old man guilty of manslaughter -- rather than second-degree murder -- late Monday in the August 2006 death of Orange County Deputy Sheriff Michael Callin.

Allan Barahona also was found guilty of resisting an officer with violence, leaving the scene of a crash with death, vehicular homicide and driving with a suspended license. The Orlando man's sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 16. He faces up to 60 years in prison.

i would say his public defender lawyer told him to lie and say not guilty because that is how our justice system works, they want you to lie they want you to plead not guilty, if you man up a nd tell the truth they totally screw you over, not a good incentive for telling the truth. so our tax dollarsa re not only paying for the scumbag lawyer, but the illegals prison time, and eventual deportation, add that up for 10 years plus his 80,000 dollars in damage.. and we taxpayers have a pretty steep bill on our hands... if i had it my way id inject a few tracking beacons on this basterd and deport him down to the mex/guatemala border and make sure he could not get back to the us. we already spending sooooo much on this guy, and it will only increase, because he probly has 12 kids with 5 different illegal alien mothers as well, YAY more welfare moochers, more non english speaking do nothing kids in our schools, more idiots getting free treatment at our emergency rooms YAY!!! its a clusterfark of a problem and it seems the govt wotn do anything about it because they say its not fair or not pollitically correct. or they are just a bunch of whiners

This all boils down to Illegal Aliens should have NO benefits here in the US accept to breathe.

The propensity for an Illegal Alien to drive Illegally and to drive drunk are very high. Drinking and driving is part of their culture----to prove how manly you are. Yeah....I know this Illegal Alien wasn't drinking and driving based on accounts.....

This Illegal Alien has been cited before and he should have been deported or had been locked up for a few years.

One more victim in the recent rash of fatalities attributed to Illegal aliens here in Florida...and this state has lost many officers lately...in fact this friday there is going to be a "HOP" concert to raise money for those who have died recently..."HOP" meaning Help Our Police....this is a very sad day for the familes of the deceased...

Also, there has been a rash of these incidents all over this country lately....I am sure something will be done...but how long before we lose more of those who help protect and serve?

Yes, I believe it. I hope that Orange Co. is smart enough to make sure this illegal is held without bail. He WILL flee if released and chances are he isn't using his real name.

What is REALLY sad is the "multiple suspensions on his record". That means this illegal has been pulled over and convicted repeatedly yet not deported. This sort of thing has to stop. When they are found, they need to go BEFORE they murder someone...even if the murder is negligent homocide, which is what he will probably get.

Does this surprise me, heck no. Do you realize how many accidents happen daily because of individuals that should not be driving, or who cannot legally do so? I am sorry this had to happen, but I have friends that were hit by hit and run drives who are here illegally and injured. Thank goodness some of them were deported after being caught, the problem is they also often use stolen cars and do this on purpose.

That is heart-wrenching to say the least. My God! He was only 26.

If Barahona had been deported on any of the other driving violations, this could have been avoided. Pray for his family.

It's sad. but think of all the benefits we get from the diversity of having guest workers here.

I'm being facetious. When the first act of a person upon entering the U.S. is a crime, you have to expect that they have no respect for any of our other laws.

Hey The One - Hit and run is a crime, the guy was probably also DWI, I would guess that based on his previous record and that fact that he didn't stay around to report his "accident" or try to help his victim.

labkin - Do you know what illegal means? The term should be criminal immigrants since they commit a crime by being here illegally. ALL illegal immigrants are criminals by definition and in fact.
