Believe it or not, for the first time in my cooking career, I have cut up jalapeno peppers for a dish (was cooking for someone ELSE!). I have washed my hands with the usual soap/water, but when I rub my eyes, or touch my lips (putting food in my mouth) ....

IT BURNS!!!!

Is there some special way I can wash or treat my hands that will get this crappy juice residue OFF so I won't BURN any longer???

Bless ALL of you for your kind words and suggestions!!!

No, I don't like "hot" foods. I was cooking chili for a client of mine and she wanted me to use the jalapenos in it. I did seed it. I would have used rubber gloves if I had been planning on it, but it was a last minute addition from their garden!

I HOPE there's no "next time!" But I WILL do better in protecting my hands if there comes a next time!

Yeah, I feel like such a DOPE for having this problem! I know how to get ONION smell off my hands, but the Jalapeno juice was a new experience for me!

I would NEVER survive in the SouthWest!

As a pepper spray instructor for the Sheriff's Office, I might be able to offer you some insight on this. After all, pepper spray is made from jalapeno peppers. Use a solution of baby shampoo, sugar and water.

Jalapeno On Hands

Milk, like they said, er even beer, but NEVER touch your eyes (as you found out).

The jalapeno spice is in an oil, and oil and water don't mix, so just using the sink won't help. Milk will break it up, and beer will too. Soap might.

Sometimes it's better to take a baggie or something and put it over your hands before chopping, then take the baggie off when done and throw it away without touching the outside.

This is called "learning the hard way".

Hope you feel better.

Bless your sweet heart.....I can tell you are not from Texas or the other southwestern states.

Go to this link:

"Put on rubber gloves!! It is very important to do that unless you are fond of pain. Pepper oil burns! Also keep your hands away from your face!! After you have split the peppers in half and seeded them, wash your hands in milk. That will get rid of the hot juice. Still be careful for a bit afterward."

Dear hothands,
I LOVE hot foods, like jalepenos, chinese red bell peppers, habernos, and several other varieties. I don't know how to get the oil off my hands (ALWAYS USE A FORK TO EAT), but I do know (because a dietician told me and it WORKS) that milk has an enzyme in it that cools off (neutralizes) the hot feeling. If you eat spicy stuff an it is starting to upset your stomach, drink milk or eat ice cream. Milk or ice cream will also cool off your mouth and taste buds. I don't know because I've never had it in my eyes, but if I did, I wouldn't hesitate to pour milk over my face in the sink.
I like it HOT,
John the Baptist

A diluted bleach water solution will draw the pepper juice from your hands.

Bleach feels greasy because it is dissolving the fat in your skin. The pepper juice gets into the pores and when you flush the surface fat, you will flush the pepper juice too.

You are lucky it was just a jalapeño. I made the mistake of rubbing my eyes after handling Habenero's. I thought my eye was on fire! I was in soooo much pain. Bleach works.

Do you plan on using plastic gloves next time?

I let it wear off, but I have touched my eyes and made them burn, but not really bad.

They've already given lots of things to try. Let us know which one works.

I'm allergic to bleach, I couldn't do that.

Ouch! lol

Soak your hands in milk and then rinse them off with "clean" milk. Clean= not the milk you soaked your hands in =)
