Any kind of regular training in a martial art will have the by product of making you stronger. Kendo will increase the muscle endurance in your arms and probably help your cardio out. The best for getting someone in shape seems to be Muay Thia Kick Boxing. That envolves a lot of jumping around and kicking and punching.
They say that Bruce Lee just did pushups and that he could bench press 300 pounds. That would be a lot of pushups.

Kendo training involves different implements.
There is Shinai which is used in free sparring.
Bokken is used sword against sword.
Then there is Suburito.
This is a very heavy sword simulator that strengthens you tremendously. It is also actually a weapon, as is the Bokken. Both are deadly weapons.
Shinken is a "live" blade. 'nuf said.
Suburito is what you want.

It all depends on you. Training in any form of martial arts start out very gently, with emphasis on injury prevention. Training intensity gradually builds as time goes by. You do not have to be in very good physical condition to begin martial art training, but regularly training gradually and safely improves your condition. When you reach the more advanced levels, you can take your physical condition to whatever level you choose.

Kendo will train you both physically and mentally. It will tone your muscles, and yet doesn't make you bulky like people doing weights and wrestling, or make you a stick like kongfu or TKD. You should give it a try.
