For 20 years I tried everything I could think of to fight the depression on my own. Nothing I did worked more than a day or two.
When the Dr. said my body had changed and could no longer make what it takes to function without depression,
I mentally fought his diagnosis, believing I had somehow failed.

Now, over 10 yrs. on medication, I can function, have gotten my life and my relationships back. I can smile and I can laugh. Today I have HOPE !

There is no way I will stop the medication, going back to the depths of being unable to function.

I have been on antidepressants before and, for the most part, they did a good job in helping with the depression. There are times when you need that extra push to be able to deal with the dark feelings. I do think that antidepressants need to be coupled with counseling in order to help you deal with the causes of the depression/anxiety/mental illness or whatever.

I think it's horrible that some people think that those with mental problems can deal without medications....

That's like telling an amputee that they can deal without their prosthetic legs. And that's just wrong. Some people need chemicals for a better functioning brain and the right medication can help those with mental illness to "walk" better in life. Even more when coupled with therapy.

Mental illness should be looked at the same way any other illness is.

No one looks down on people who take medication for high blood pressure.

I feel that without them I would not be here. If you have a chemical imbalance in your brain, and these drugs can balance things out for you, then why not take it. Some people have a negative attitude towards them, but those are the people that have never experienced depression.

I take pills and they have helped me through.
Sometimes you cannot control your brain chemistry. You can have the greatest attitude in the world, but while your brain is going haywire, you need something to stabilise it. A great attitude and medication have helped me through
