I think the Old Testament is a political manifesto designed to keep the masses in their place. moses may have been a religious leader -- but he was also a political leader. He used the fear of God effectively to keep people from revolting against him.

This political manifesto is combined with myths that are very similar to the Norse and Greek myths. Is there a difference between Eve's story and Pandora's?

The bible is a bronze age writing, and offers no more moral instruction than the Iliad or any other book of that time.

It demeans women, it is silent on the immorality of slavery, it condones the killing of homosexuals and otherwise offers very little commentary on 21st century life.

In other words, it isn't much different than any other book or mythology written in the Bronze Age, 2000 years ago.

However, the bible is important to western civilization from a cultural perspective. Its stories and morals inform our own, but they are not prescriptive. To ignore that humanity has learned anything new in the last 2000 years is ignorant.
