It depends on the situation. Yes, people do get help from social security. It is either SSI or disability insurance depending if they have worked long enough and have enough credits.
Both these programs can be very hard to qualify for and it can be very stressful on a ill person and the family. It can take years to be accepted too.
It does happen though, and then the person has medical coverage too.

I had a great job when I was stricken with schizophrenia and had to quit. I applied for Social Security Disability and was homeless for 3 years until it was approved.

Now SSDI pays me a monthly check, I get full medical from Medicare, and they pay the $2,000 a month for my medication. I am one of the lucky ones. The government takes good care of me.

But there are millions of mentally ill people who can't survive for 2 to 3 years waiting for SSDI to get approved .Those who can't work need money to live on and there is none. And there is no mental health care for them either.

Nothing at all! Unless a mentally ill person has rich relatives who can place them in a comfortable institution, they usually end up homeless or in jail.

In fact, if you did a professional survey of all prisons in the USA, you would find that a majority of non-violent inmates are socially and emotionally dysfunctional so that they often cannot "get along" in society, without emotional support. They self-medicate against hearing voices and being in a constant state of waking nightmares by abusing alcohol and various other street drugs. Forget trying to get medications from state-run institutions. They are so underfunded in states like Nevada that it is estimated that funding for programs to help the mentally ill with their needs is still being funded at the level that was barely sufficient even in the 1950s!

I don't think the mentally sick people get as much help as they should be here in America. Just look at our prisons...so many of them are mentally disturbed individuals that could have avoided being in prisons if they got the help they needed int he first place.

Sometimes there comes a time where we can't always rely on the government. Look for a private organization besides the government that can help you.

it depends. most do not just get money for being mentally sick but if they had a job and couldn't work anymore they might get SSI/disability. look at the streets of major cities in the US - NYC, Chicago, Philly, etc. and you will see alot of mentally ill people fending for themselves, surely most are not getting any checks, shame isn't it?

* It's also "obvious" you can't direct where your tax money goes, if that's the case everyone would be directing their tax dollars....

No, they really don't get any help. My brother is completely disabled due to many serious mental conditions, and social security denied him 3 times. It's been 5 years now and we're applying again for him (he can't even do that himself anymore). He has no access to any care, and every dr charges way more than we can afford. We have tried everywhere,

So the answer is no.

The only way you can get some assistance, if you are seeing your family doctor and a psychiatrist. Basically, you have to prove that you are mentally sick.

not probably, I worked interior the psychological wellbeing sense for 6 years and considered to many psychological unwell human beings fall in between the cracks. they might are available in for counseling to boot as drugs yet they're left to shelter for themselves. It takes a rustic to combat for his or her rights the government heavily isn't acceptable. whilst their is not any funds there is not any help. i'm hoping this helps.
