The magnesium lighter gets my vote. It will work in day or night and puts out enough sparks to start almost any kind of tinder on fire. If your tinder is a bit damp, just shave off some of the magnesium and add it to the tinder. If you can't start a fire with that, matches wouldn't have done you any good at all. If you don't want to spend the few bucks that a magnesium starter costs, just pick up a butane lighter.

The following site has the history of fire making and shows many ways to make a fire in the wilderness whithout matches, etc. Excellent illustrations, clear instructions.

Techniques include: The Hand Drill, The Bow Drill, Sparks from Flint, Making Charcloth, etc.

flint and magnesium bar is fast.

but heres what i do:
get a cotton ball and wipe it in some vaseline. rub it around in your hand to make sure the vaseline coats it evenly. tear a little peice off so its really wispy. put the rest away.
get tinder. it should be very thin fiber-y wood shavings.
put the wispy cotton ball in your tinder. strike your flint bar so the sparks ignite the cotton ball. this starts a fire. add tiny sticks, then larger sticks until you get the fire you want.

heres what i dont do:
carry matches. they get wet, they take up a lot of space compared to a lighter or a magnesium bar.

use a magnifying glass. you need a fire when its dark or rainy. a magnifying glass will not help you in those situations.

use rocks, knives, or my other gear to make sparks. if i scrape my knife or my axe up on rocks and break it, it won't be useful when i need it.

If you have some bullets, take the bullet out and use the gun powder. Take a small rock and set of the primer, or if you have a gun, take the bullett off of another round and fire the blank into the gunpowder. If you have glasses and patience they can be used as a magnifying glass. Anything metal like a knife if struck hard enough and at the right angle on a rock will produce some sparks, but nothing like flint. Also the classic bow and stick is supposed to work, but I was never able to accomplish it, sigh...

I seen this thing at a gun shop it is two bottles you squirt one all over what you want to burn and then squirt the other one on top of it and then it will catch fire due to a chemical reaction.Sorry I don't remember the name but I'm sure someone will mention it.Also road flares work really good for building fires.

I personally carry a cigaret lighter. Flint and steel sets are popular but depend on dry kindling. All your Boy Scout skills can be used, but they're generally some work.

Here is another vote for a magnesium firestarter. I've had one in my possibles bag for 20 years or more.

In daylight with strong sun, a magnifying glass, or even your spectacles would do well, if you have some good dry tinder.

I have seen a flint starter that really throws out some serious sparks. A magnifying glass works, if you have sun.

a nine volt battery and steel wool.

Gather tinder, leaves, pine needles, etc.

short out battery with the steel wool.

When the steel wool catches fire, light campfire.
