What's worse- this terrible crime or the 'pit bull' publicity?

Why doesn't the headline say "Fed to DOGS?"

What sort of punishment should be given to this person and how do we get the media to stop sensationalizing the 'pit bull' angle of every single story?

ANY breed could have done this if they were taught to regard the cats as prey/food...your thoughts?

Thanks.

Oh, my gosh, this makes me nauseous.

Sure, it could be any dog who was trained to see cats as food, but the fact is, his dogs were Pitts.

He should be prosecuted to the maximum. He sounds like a psychopath who probably going to fight those poor dogs. I am sure the dogs will be put down now.

I don't know what the answer is, but the fact is that too many people are breeding and fighting Pitts. It is a major problem in every city in the country. It is not "somewhere else".

Shelters are full of Pitts and Pitt mixes. Most do not find homes, ever.

It seems to me that Pitt owners should spend more time as activists for saving the dogs through responsible breeding, and lobbying to stop this horrible behavior. It just seems like people are so upset about the press these dogs get instead of looking at the cause and the real problems.

I'm honestly not sure which one is worse because they're both terrible and unnecessary. You're right-any breed could've done that, but of course since it has to do with pits, they're going to tell everybody and make people think pits are terrible, even though they are innocent-the owner is terrible and should never get to have the pleasure of owning a dog, or any animal for that matter. He should be punished severely, but unfortunately, he probably won't. The media is all over pit stories now because their have been some just about everyday in the newspaper here in Texas, so I don't know what'll stop them. They obviously know nothing about dogs, especially pits, or else they wouldn't publish the things they do about pits because they really are great dogs, but sadly, many of them get stuck with terrible owners.

Both are terrible crimes, imo. In this story the media is stereotyping the type of owner for the dog breed and misses the torture to the dogs as well as the cats. Mentally speaking, the dogs will be messed up from being so abused, feeding them cats that are tortured and abused. No doubt that while the cats are shredded, they are also shredding the dogs and this psychopath is getting off on ALL the gore.
I wish the article had just said "dogs" or focused on the plight of the mistreatment of all the animals.
I'd like to see that person put into prison for at least a year followed by ten years of mandatory work, half his salary going to rescue and having to do community service, cleaning poop out of dog parks for every weekend of those ten years. I'd like to see him forbidden to own animals and I'd like to see him castrated so he can't procreate and either abuse his kids or create a "mini-me" of himself.
Then I'd like to see a mandatory long term prison sentence without parole if he went back to harming any animals.

I read the story as "fed to dogs". Maybe because I don't have any strong feelings about pitbulls, when I read the story, the breed did not register in my mind except that the dogs were not of small breed. I know from Yahoo Answers that a lot of people blame "the media" and I posted before about not seeing pitbull stories in the news. But now I think it possible I've read them, but only remember them as dog stories. Once again, the only place where I hear about the pitbull hysteria is here on Y Answers dog section.
Just wanted to say that not everyone is pitbull aware/sensitized.

Actually I think the worst part is the news trying to justify it by saying he was eliminating "injured cats from his neighborhood" sounds to me it wasn't really being taken seriously because the were "injured" How many Injured cats do you see everyday. Yeah, the Pitt bull crap is just crap and its the owner that should be held accountable but, people are wonders at placing blame on the animal instead. This guy should get jail time at the very least. I think he should have a mental evaluation as well. Seems he likes to torture animals and should be banned from EVER owning even a cockroach.

I'm sorry but I couldn't look at the link. I can tell you that I agree with you 100%. Any animal can, unfortunately, be taught to regard most anything as prey/food. Think rabbits and training greyhounds to race by chasing a rabbit. I've been around several pitt bulls owned by responsible and loving people. These dogs are as sweet as can be. Just remember Barbara Woodhouse and her wonderful book, "No Bad Dogs". She was right, just bad owners. The media want to sell papers and as long they can do it with those stories, they will. Money talks.

You are right any breed could have done this....and seeing as he's young..and in to drugs ect i'm not surprised it was a pit. what a shame of the breed and the poor wittle kitty cats.... I'm guessing this young man is one of those...who have always abused animals...they say its the first step to murder.

I'm not sure which is worse...they are both HORRID....the pit bull is a paper seller. and the thought of the dogs being praised to kill something....and neighbors cats at that...yet another reason not to let ur cat outside!

I don't know what is worse. You are 100% right ANY breed could have done this. People have been known to train pigs to kill people and eat them. If that guy lived near me I would have to move or I would be in jail next to him. I own an American Staffordshire Terrier mix and just another headline for people to hate and fear the breed. I hate people. I don't know how people can hear an animal in pain and either not care or actually enjoy it. Line up this guy next to Vick - get a gun

Any breed could have done this.

I have a friend who has a pack of Samoyeds and there is NO WAY I would let her dogs near my cat as I could guarantee he'd be dead. I own or have owned or co-owned several dogs with her and none of them showed more than a passing interest in the cat... but I know her dogs have killed neighborhood cats that wander into the yard... as well as having killed a neighbor's yorkie that also had wandered into the yard.

*sigh*

I just live life believing that karma will pay out what's due... I pity this guy in prison.
