The bible is not a pure text and the question of how the bible was put together, who decided that these particular books and letters were the definitively the word of god and so on is something that to me, puts a whole question mark over taking the bible to literally.

God is a personal belief as well as a religious and cultural one. Why do you think so many wars are fought over what form God should take and the so called importance of being 'right' to the exclusion of all other points of view.
People can and do reconcille their religious beliefs with their sexuality and these people I have more respect for, because sexuality in the context of religion is a side issue that really shouldn't matter. I don't need to take quotes out of a mis-quoted and mis-understood set of texts in order to justify being right. I just know this to be true from life experience.

Therefore the answer to your question (for me) is God cares about harmony and understanding. God cares about every single one of us for all our quirks, differences and oddities.
