I have raised dogs since 1969. While my preferred breed is Dachshunds of both sizes, I don't feel they are the perfect pet for everyone. An older Dachshund would be good for this living situation but not a puppy. In fact I think it should be an adult dog no matter what breed is decided on. Boston Terriers are great little pets. Pugs are great but shed terribly as does the Welsh Corgi. A Shih Tzu or Havanese but keep the hair clipped short. Toy Poodles are great little dogs and with a grooming appointment about once a month or so, they are easy keepers. An adult miniature Dachshund of any coat (smooth, wire or long).

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are the way to go definitely! I have one and he is the most docile of all my dogs (I have 2 min pins, toy italian greyhound & golden retriever). They are bred to be 'helping dogs' so they are easy to train, smart & extremely patient and loving. A healthy litter-pick will grow to be 13 to 15 lbs, if you want smaller try to chose the 'runt'. Also, they do not have a yappy, offensive or piercing bark, unlike the beagle someone recommended. Some pictures show this breed with long hair. To eliminate shedding, I keep mine shaved close, but leave the hair on the ears and tail in tact. He looks extra cute. The only other breed I would recommend that has a similiar dispostion is the Shitzu, just smaller (about 8 to 10 lbs). Good luck!

I would recommend a pomeranian.
When I had my pom, he hated long walks and he was a wonderful companion requiring very little in the way of grooming.
Poms are a recommended breed for seniors. They are a velcro dog because they love to be on your knee or lying on your feet. They look like furry foxes and weigh around 5 lbs which also makes them easy to pick up and carry. They're small but wiry and they would be hard to step on. :)
My dog would bark once when the door knocked and I never found him to be yappy. He wasn't overly excitable even when he was a pup.

Wiki has pictures and lots of info
You might also look at the "designer" breeds that are cropping up. Pompoo's tend to be easier to potty train. (although I didn't have any problem training my pom)
There are some pics of my pom here which show his size very well.

Sadly, I only had him for 3 years and lost him to a seizure disorder (not common for poms) and after 2 dogless years, we got a golden doodle which is the perfect pet for a family with two boys who love a running companion :)
As you're looking for a dog, the best thing to search for is "breed name" problems. You will usually find all of the negatives you need to know and it will help you decide. Once you decide on a breed, try to find a breed specific message board where you can go and ask questions.

I will always think the coolest, cutest dog that I ever owned was a miniture collie. Collies are loyal, smart, funny, fun, and very easily trainable. My baby slept right at the foot of my bed and died at a very old age. I highly recommend this breed to anyone and if I still owned a home would not hesitate getting another collie in a heartbeat.

I would definitely go with a cocker spaniel. Very laid back dogs. Medium in size, just remember that when they are puppies all puppies tend to be excitable. Whatever you do, do not let anyone talk you into a border collie that type of dog is the complete opposite of what you want.

I would strongly suggest a dachshund or miniature dachshund. These little dogs are small, but pack a punch with their personality. They are great lap dogs, get along with other animals, and are fine with or without exercise. No people food, though! Not good. Anyway, they aren't typically "yippy" or moody, but make very good listeners and are just too cute. They come in many varieties and are just a joy to own. Number one best thing about them: tiny poops! ;) I now have a basset (it's actually my hubby's) and I wish it was a doxie. :( Oh, and you can also name them really cool names like Longfellow or Lowrider, or Brotwurst.
Good luck on your doggie hunt! Check out the link below for top ten reasons to own a doxie. ;)

A Chow Chow would be nice, looks like a bear or a lion depending on who looks at it, with long dense coat. It's a mid sized dog about 60 lbs. Doesnt need much walking and doesnt like much attention either in fact it's somewhat like a snub but very loyal to their masters. Most of them bite though. Only good for the experienced owners definitely a no no for first timers. For the pictures, go to yahoo type chow chow and click on the images.

A female greyhound...they are couch potatoes (contrary to popular belief) and need only 2 or 3 shtrt walks a day. They are docile and loving (unless you are a cat) and there are so many needed to be re homed. This is the link to a re homing centre. I have 3 dogs from there and they are all beautiful. http://www.wsretiredgreyhounds.co.uk/
