Neither of those. I would say when it adversly effects their life and they can't or won't stop.
So even if you only drank one day a month but you got in fights, lost jobs, lost marriages or your kids didn't respect you but you didn't have enough control to stop the drinking.
You can drink a little every day, or alone or very expensive products without having a problem but when your doctor says you need to cut back and you don't or your spouse says they will leave if you don't or you get DUIs and won't quit it is a problem if you were alone or not.

I'm far from an alcoholic, but probably the most drunk I've ever been was alone. That was a good, well what would it be when ur drunk at 10pm and are still buzzed at 9am?

I would say that someone is an alcoholic when they have an alcohol dependency. They simply can't go without a drink, like a smoker can't go without a cigarette. The other possibility is that get drunk sometimes but when they do, they get violent around family. That's never a good thing, no matter how often. Maybe they wouldn't be an alcoholic, but they certainly should know not to get drunk with family because they just get violent. So, that's a disregard for the welfare of others, that is, putting the drink ahead of family. That's not normal, so I guess they'd have to be called an alcoholic. I don't get it though, I'm not violent when drunk, quite the opposite. I don't think I could actually be violent....probably miss hitting whatever I intended.

Has anyone told you they think you're an alcoholic?
Do you NEED to drink? Are there times when all you can think about is getting a drink?
Do you feel like you need to HIDE alcohol or lie about how much/how often you drink?
Do you ever not remember how you got somewhere? Do you not remember how you spent the evening?
Look in the mirror - how do your eyes look? your skin? your nose?

drinking alone or spending a lot doesn't mean you're an alcoholic.

When u starts getting into trouble, (which may be a blessing in disguise).. a DUI, , a broken marriage, fights etc., whether it is your fault or not, it is still time to seek help.
Hey, it is better than getting killed on your first night out, and that DOES happen to some good people.
We can usually quit bad habits if we want to, just like that, and I think we have all been there. I for one was drifting into becoming a 'beeraholic" one week... Just a thirst for beer, especially in summer.

Drinking alone is a clue...especially getting drunk alone. Drinking for the sake of getting drunk. NEEDING a drink.

If you are addicted to alcohol you are an alcoholic. If you "jones" when alcohol is not available you are probably addicted to alcohol.
