"What do you sing if you don't sing hymns?"
Is this a question for individuals? I thought it referred to group singing, as in an a-theistic version of a "good ol' Baptist hymn-sing". There are so many rousing, up-lifting hymns in the Christian church, and they are a strong "hook" - they keep many people from leaving the church, whether they realize it or not. Atheists need to have some counter-hymns, even if we appropriate the tunes and just re-work the words. The tunes are mostly "in the public domain", are they not? We need words that inspire our natural joy and appreciation of life, words that glorify doing good and appreciating what we have, as opposed to words that are mere take-downs of Christianity. I saw one site that has used the tunes to two different Christian hymns, and changed the words, but they are pretty-much completely anti-Christian. One verse in that vein is enough - I'd like to see some re-wordings done that lend themselves to non-religious expressions of the joy of life. Having our own tunes would be better, of course, but I'm not holding my breath. Give us something we can sing, no matter what age we are, and just have a "hoot-nanny" good time!

I'm not an atheist (yet?), but I love to sing Godsmack, Tool and Metallica. I rock!
And when I'm feeling more mellow, I sing Jazz standards. Tony, Frank and Ella would be proud.
And every once in awhile, I'll belt out Mimi's aria from La Boheme. But I just can't hit those high notes anymore ....
I love the feeling of singing. It makes me feel somehow complete!

I think because I'm a Buddhist more than anything I can answer this too! Recently, I have been whipping out my inner Bono and singing U2 songs. We all need to bring out the inner-rockstar more often, the world would be a 'better' place.....errrr......of course, we'd have to nix raging egos but I think we can work with that.....

I all I ever have stuck in my head is some form of song from a children's show/movie. I get a lot of weird looks when I realize I am humming Barney again. The joy of children.

Bawdy pirate songs and lots of kid songs... with and for my little kids.
Oh, and when I want to torture my teenagers, I sing "I'm hot cuz I'm fly, you ain't cuz you're not. This is why, this is why, this is why I'm hot." I can get them to do ANYTHING to make me stop singing.
