The oil from onions gets into the crevices of your skin, causing the smell. The acid in lemon juice acts like an astringent breaking down and washing away the onion oil, which of course, takes the smell with it.

I dunno.

My guess would be the acid in the lemons breaks down the "smelly" sulfur compounds in the onions.

Lemons take the smell out of anything, really. I have a friend who had to go to an autopsy of a pretty decomposed body, and they tell you to take a shower and rub cut lemons all over your body to get the smell off.

sulfur is what causes your eyes to burn and your hands to smell after chopping onions. The acid in the lemon neutralizes the sulfur and the smell "washes away"
