Alberto Gonzales. No one can make anyone resign.

Don't worry, the senatorial democrats will probably investigate him for letting himself go.

The U.S. Attorney General reports to the President of the United States, and serves at his pleasure. While there was a lot of pressure from both sides of the aisle in Congress for Mr. Gonzales to resign, it was likely the President's decision, ultimately.

Popular opinion -- so many people distrusted him that it was not possible for him to accomplish his goals -- and the fact that so many people were calling for his resignation made everything he did get put under a microscope -- and he could not accomplish his (or Bush's) goals with that level of attention.
