Like I just used U for "you" and R for "are" in the Q (for Question) in the question I just asked. because that question used up all 110 characters of the question-box. If it biases you to see those words I will avoid them even if it makes asking intelligent Questions harder to fit.

My Q was specific and any other tasteless derogatory, disrespectful names are not the issue addressed here. Relative offensiveness is not a good argument for using the word "cop". I want to be sure I can use the short word w/o triggering negative associations--esp when the Q's I ask are, or can be, provocative in the positive sense or about controversial matters.

I wouldn't expect any police officers to be offended. They get called a lot worse!

Cop in itself is not derogatory, it originates from the first police department in London... they were given uniforms with buttons and badges made out of copper so other people could identify them. From this came the nickname "copper", which was shortened to "cop"

The content of a question determines if the question is offensive. Not the use of the slang "cop". So, no the use of the term is not offensive to me.

I don't think that the average Peace Officer would be offended...

In the movies of the 1940's, the prison guards were called
''screws''...where did that come from ?

Actually, I appreciate the fact that you ask... I don't mid cop... I really don't mind any name. As others have stated we get called everything. "5 OH", "Pig", "Dick", whatever...The more derogatory the term or the more upset a criminal gets the more it lets us know we are doing our job.

i don't think the term cop insults a lot of people, even law enforcement. in fact i've heard a lot of police use the term themselves

Who cares what they think? You're going to call them a lot worse after you get that ticket. Just give them a donut.
