The celebration of Sukkot / Succot will begin at sunset on September 26th, 2007.
Sukkot commemorates the years that the Jews spent in the desert on their way to the Promised Land, and celebrates the way in which God protected them under difficult desert conditions.
Sukkot is also known as the Feast of Tabernacles, or the Feast of Booths.
You shall dwell in sukkot seven days...in order that future generations may know that I made the Israelite people live in sukkot when I brought them out of the land of Egypt, I the Lord your God.
Leviticus 23:42
Unfortunatley not, but the family will
I do not think the university would be best pleased if I built a hut within the grounds of the university.
Building an open air structure in which to live during the holiday would be very cold and possible wet.As you know the essential thing about the hut is that it should have a roof of branches and leaves, through which those inside can see the sky, and that it should be a temporary and flimsy thing.
Edit: for those who are puzzled as to what Sukkot is all about.

YES! two of my 3 daughters and I just bought our first house together and I always promised the grandkids that if we got a house, we would build a sukkah- SO WE DID! We are SO excited! We decorated with fall garlands, gourds, pumpkins and other fall stuff. We're planning on dinner tonight, but there is a 60% chance of rain- keep your fingers crossed! I told the kiddies that they could eat breakfast in it every morning too, and they think that's cool! Chag Sameach, everyone!

I will try to go to our local Chabad. The weather predictions for Anchorage later this week, however, are predicting rain and temperatures around 50 F / 10 C.

It is one of my favorites. We decorate the sukkah with clove oranges and it reminds me of when I was little, we used to give them to my grandmother for autumn gifts, and they smell amazing!
This year at the dollar store they had these packages of fake fall leaves. I bought three packages and am making these lovely garlands out of the leaves and some brown thread, to hang in the sukkah with some streamers. I am very excited.
