Yeah, they are. In catholicism these "gods" were transformed into what we known today as Saints. This was done only to help people who believed in Gods to convert to Catholicism.

I don't know about gods - all we have to go on is the words of their prophets and in one case - son. These have written down by followers and interpolated by scholars and other enthusiasts. A serious case of Chinese whispers ensues with the message diluted at each copying point. I believe the Buddha said "find out for yourself" - very wise.

In any-case religions seem to need rapid updating in order to keep up with the rate of change. The Catholic took hundreds of years to admit it was wrong about Galileo. Other religions can be the same if not worse.

Surely mediocrity is relative? And thus you must have something else to measure these gods against. It would be helpful if you would indicate what you are putting them up against. Otherwise your question will lack the specificality required to yield interesting responses.

polytheism encourages interaction between deities, which as we know from stage and screen promotes conflict and character development.

single-diety houselholds tend to lack such conflict, even when they have a supporting cast minions and/or falllen minions; there's no real conflict since the main character's niche can never change (sort of like Superman - you know he will always win, so he's less interesting than Lennie Briscoe on L&O, who could screw up).

The Elohim are really great, but that Yahweh who took over in Genesis 2 is a vicious, jealous, genocidal monster.

Gods are what their worshippers make them. When the Jew lived in the desert if was a harsh environment so they wanted a harsh god but what we need in a soft civilised society is a soft pleasant god and that's what you get.

God does a much better job of running the universe than any of us could ever do... :-)

They are not mediocre? One word too many.

They are not. (They do not exist.)
