kamikazes wear helmets to keep their mind together

If they got hit in the head on the way down it might keep them from hitting their target. It was also a sign of honor to die wearing your uniform and a helmet was a personal part of the uniform that also helped them stay warm in the cold air they flew in on the way to their target.

Much as I despise the behaviour of the Japanese military in WW2 (and well done Harry Truman) can we not spare some sympathy for those misguided young men who were recruited as kamikazes, instead of making jokes about them? Every one a mother's son, after all.

The limited protection was designed not to keep the pilot from getting hurt or even survive. The point was to give him a chance to survive the Allied defenses to successfully complete his mission. Bullets, glass and shrapnel can be so distracting!

They didn't. They wore head gear to keep their head warm so they wouldn't suffer hypothermia while flying. Their planes didn't have heaters.
