1. The stem is upright so it holds leaves up in the light in the proper arrangement. This is important because leaves need exposure to the sunlight in order to carry on photosynthesis.
2. The stem has vascular tissue called xylem and phloem to transport food and water through the plant.
3. Some stems are adapted to store food.
4. Some stems have positive thigmotropism - a response that lets them grow toward touch. This lets them twine around structures and use those structures as support to grow further up into the light.
5. Some stems are waxy to prevent excess water loss.
