my daughter has spent a lot of time in hospital with bowel problems, the food is at best unappetising and at worst inedible, she mostly seemed to eat sandwiches or have food brought in. she was supposed to have a no fibre diet and the bes t they could offer was ham and tomato sandwich on brown bread!

Most hospital food is not that great. Last time I was in for any length of time however, because I was an employee, they let me order from the cafeteria. It was great. I had subs, pizza, good sandwiches, etc.

Once, as a child having my appendix out, I remember getting the, I swear, the same bowl of pea soup every day for lunch, just reheated. Finally I tossed it into the toilet, leaving a little bit, and never got it again. They must have thought I finally caved in and ate it. It was so gross. And then there was the piece of fried fish with a hair in it - so stiff I lifted the fish off the plate with it. Those times, my folks brought my food in.

I was in hospital at one stage of my life for nearly 7 weeks. The hospital food lookied so un-apetsising I thought I'll use this as a opportunity to lose a couple pounds. It was disgusting. My mum had to come in and bring me food everyday (I was only 18 at the time)- I was so grateful. I would have starved myself if I had rellied in the hospital food. My uncle was in hospital recently and I visited him everyday for two weeks. He marked down what he wanted on the food list but they brought him food that he had not marked. The soup looked so awful if you gave it to an animal you would definately have the RSPCA on your case. I suppose if you don't have taste buds its not that bad. LOL!!!

I once complained that there was no vegan choice when I was in hospital and was promised a special meal. The meal was duly brought to me on a silver plate with matching lid. I took the lid off and guess what... NOTHING there! Not a great diet for someone recovering from major surgery eh! On another occasion I had a sandwich with mouldy bread.
I think you are safer getting food brought in!

I am VERY picky about my food, when I went into hospital 2yrs ago I was dreading having to eat the food. But you know it wasn't that bad, my favourite was potato and sweetcorn bake, yummy. If the food is as good when I go in October I shall be quite happy !!

I've never spent a large amount of time in the hospital and havent had to eat it, but I'm sure it can't be worse than school food!

I have in the past nowadays only if I could choose which hospital I have to go into. Good Hope "No Hope" West Mids, Burton, Staffs or George Elliott Nuneaton. I'd go for Burton actually if I had the choice.

I've never had "bad" hospital food. It isn't the "Four Seasons" or anything that'll make it to the "Food Network", but it is the "right" balance of nutrients or substances for the given patient and malady.

The "best" story I can tell you about hospital food involved my uncle, who was dying of old age. I happened to visit him during the dinner hours (visitors are generally not allowed during such times - - depending on the hospital, of course - - simply because too many people can get in the way of an otherwise efficient service, but I "snuck" in; the hospital was just a mile from work). He sat up when the orderly brought him a tray of . . . well, let's just call it "gruel", shall we? ;)

He looked at it, then he looked at me, and said, "I could really use a steak, right about now!" Well, technically it wasn't allowed, but I told him to keep his appetite. I went out to a local steak house, told them the situation, and they wrapped-up a three-course steak dinner, with everything pre-sliced, so my uncle wouldn't have to deal with that! They didn't even charge me for it! (later that year, as a "thank you" for that very nice gesture, I had a New Year's party at that restaurant)

When I returned to the hospital, my uncle's eyes lit up when he saw what I brought him. I had never seen him smile that broadly before! Just then, the nurse walked in, took a look at me (remember . . . visitors weren't allowed during those hours), then looked at the sumptuous meal and the bag with the restaurant name on it, and much to our surprise, she simply walked out! I guess she knew about my uncle's inevitable death, and figured it wasn't worth anybody's time or effort to give the man a decent meal! (I later brought her a bouquet of flowers and a box of candy for not "ratting" on me! She laughed, but didn't say anything about the incident)

So, "yes" I would eat hospital food, and, technically speaking, "no", you should NOT bring your own stuff in for numerous reasons: it may be too much for you to handle, given that you just had an operation; it may contain something bad for you, or was improperly cooked, and then the hospital might get blamed; it could cause a reaction to your roommate (i.e., either allergic or he might grab it from you!), etc, etc, etc.

As for your finding hospital food "awful", consider that you're (hopefully) not going to be there long, and just deal with it! Of course, if you'd rather have a nutrient intravenous (IV) instead of regular food, I'm sure they could arrange that for you! ;)

I worked at a hopital and the food was not that bad. I am assuming the patients ate the same stuff. So yes I would eat hospital food.
